God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
The Least of These
By Lu Su

Veterans Day came and went. In Canada, they call it Remembrance Day. You'd think with North America involved on this day, it would be a really big day. But I bet more than half the population didn't even know it was Veterans Day yesterday. I checked my local paper. On Veteran's Day, the words "Veteran's Day" did NOT even appear in any of the newspaper sections. Aside from the banks and post offices being close, which then tipped me off that something was going on, Veteran's Day blew right by with no fan fare. My kids were in school, I worked a full day, you probably did too, and it was just business as usual. It just seemed like a regular day to me. No celebrations. No parades were held, .........at least none that I know of.

That last line reminded me of a funny line I heard from a female comedian. She introduces herself and says, "I'm single, I have no kids,.............or at least none that I know of."

When we were kids, didn't we get Veterans Day off? What happened to this special day? Even though we have three people in my office who served in the military, nobody brought in a cake to office to celebrate the day.

Isn't it good and right to honor those who have served our country? How about for those who served and died for our country? Politicians, movie stars, and sports athletes seem to get all the media attention; But remember it wasn't a politician, movie star, or athlete that purchased our freedom. Our soldiers did. It was through their dedication, inconvenience to their family, and total disruption to their lives that secured the enormous amount of freedom we have today. I've got this T-shirt that I don't know who gave me, but printed on the shirt it says, "Freedom is Free". I think most people have just taken our freedom for granted. And now we don't even seem to want to take a day to remember those who served our country.

I think I figured out why Veteran's Day has continued to lose its popularity. We Americans just haven't figured out how to make money off this particular day. Since almost the entire readership is involved in marketing and selling stuff, let's band together and save Veteran's Day from being wiped off the calendar. Next year, let's get out there and save Veteran's Day by selling more stuff. We'll initially pitch it as "Buy a gift and give it to a Veteran on their day". Then after that market is mature, we'll change that tradition and say the new trend is to buy a gift to every family member of every veteran that you know.

Isn't this true in American? The more money that can be made off a holiday, the more that day is remembered? We got it down to a science when it comes to these days: Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, President's Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (the day before black Friday), and of course Jesus' birthday. Isn't it sad that Black Friday gets far more press than Veteran's Day? Isn't it sad that in order for us to continue a special day, much money needs to exchanged?

What I also find very interesting is that for most birthdays, you normally would just get a single gift and give it to the person having the birthday. But for Christmas, we seem to do the exact opposite. Very few people give a gift to the one having the birthday; but instead we give gifts to our friends and family. And for some members, we give them multiple gifts. When the wise men came and saw Jesus, each of them presented a single gift to the the King. No where is it recorded that the wise man exchange gifts among themselves. The American marketing engine is very strong. Christmas now seems to be a two month holiday. It's not even Thanksgiving and I see Christmas decor up in stores.

This year, I would like to give the readership two challenges. Find a Vet and thank him or her for serving our country and making this a safer place to raise our family. The second challenge is to actually give a gift to the person having the birthday. Some might ask, "How do I go about giving a gift to God?" The answer is found in the Gospel of Matthew.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ -Matthew 25:35-40

It doesn't matter what city, town, or village you live in. I'm sure if you took the time to investigate, within walking distance, you can find one of the King's kids in desperate need. The King has allocated each of us a certain amount of coin, talent, and time (different portions to each person). He is watching you on how you treat the poor, the weak, and the marginalized in our society.
