God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Give Thanks to the LORD
By Lu Su
Northern New Jersey got its first frost three days ago. I woke up to a white lawn. I also noticed that my neighbors' roof shingles had a thin layer of frost too. It seemed that the neighborhood trees colluded with each other and said, "It's time," and picked up the pace in dropping their autumnal leaves.
A few days before the frost, I was walking our dog with my daughter. It was a chilly morning. Like her mom, my daughter's nose and fingers get cold easily. She is the eldest of my four and turned a teenager this year. So my wife and I now have a teenager in the house. I have heard many horror stories about raising teenagers, but so far it's been an absolute joy in raising her. While we were walking and enjoying the vibrant colors of all the leaves, I asked her, "Do you ever wonder how many more Autumns God will give each of us?" There was a decent pause before she responded to the questions -so I'm glad that she at least processed the question.
"Ahh..........no dad, I've never even thought about that," replied my daughter. I could tell that she found the question both a little comical and bizarre at the same time. I guess it is good and healthy that the youth never ponder their mortality. Or would it be more correct to say, "ponder their immortality?" While walking our hound and crunching through the leaves, I was reminded of this passage from wise old Solomon:
This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.
-Ecclesiastes 5:18-20
Ahh.........to be young again. In the last couple of few weeks, I've been in a really somber mood. There seems to be so much sickness and destruction around me. A friends who dedicated the best part of their life working for one company, lost his job last Thursday. In return for his 23 years of service, he was given a slip of paper, escorted out of the building, and on their way out offered the services of a grief counselor. I noticed the President was advertising that 1.1 million jobs were created in 2010; but I noticed there was no mention of how many jobs were lost this year. I also wonder with the creation of 1.1 million new jobs, how many of those are for a new and fabulous vocation in grief counseling? As bad as it is for your career comes to a grinding halt, it's even worse to lose your health.
Another friend, very athletic and outdoorsy, was told by these specialists that he has cancer and his entire prostate must be totally removed; and if he elects not to get this organ removed, they feel he has little chance to live past the age 50. Another friend on the other side of the world has been hospitalize in excruciating pain, caused by a type of bacteria that is very difficult to rid. Marriages of friends and family are crumbling around me. Physical and verbal abuse is occurring in households with young children. I guess the trees going bare provides the perfect back drop for my mood. Oh Adam, what have you done?
The longer I live, the more I realize how much the world needs a savior. I am also old and wise enough to know that this Savior's name doesn't rhyme with Obama or the Fed. I have spoken to many people and if the conversation turns to politics, I feel that some honestly believe is that the solution is for some certain person be elected or some particular fiscal policy be put in place and then all will be well. If all your hope is based on a politician or some fiscal spending policy, best ready yourself for a big disappointment.
When I am in this mood, I know the right thing to do is to praise the LORD. I do admit it is much easier praising God when times are good and your wallet is fat. But notice that the following passages of Scripture do NOT instruct us to praise God only when times are good.
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
-Thessalonians 5:18
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
-Psalms 118:1
Lately, I've been hitting the readership with some deep and very heavy theological concepts like sin and truth. Before introducing yet another heavy theological concept called grace, I thought I take a little break and market some articles that are less taxing on the brain -you know, something with that same great taste, but with 1/3 less calories.
