God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
A Mystery with Names (Aging is no fun)
By L. S. Su
Last week we looked at scientific tool called carbon radiometric dating. Realize that every type of radiometric dating requires you to make an assumption on the starting levels of a particular radioactive element found in the object you are trying to date. In the case of carbon dating, scientist are comparing the ratio of carbon-14 (radioactive) to carbon-12 (stable) and making the assumption that today's ratio of these two types of carbon atoms is approximately the same ratio found in the atmosphere thousands of years ago. However, we're finding evidence that the strength of Earth's magnetic field has a huge impact on the amount of carbon-14 that can be produced in the atmosphere -the stronger the magnetic field the less carbon-14.
If Earth's magnetic field was stronger thousands of years ago, considerably less carbon-14 would be built up in the cells of plants and animals. This would mean the starting levels of carbon-14 would actually be less than what many scientists think today. A wrong assumption here would cause objects age dated via carbon radiometric dating to be much older than they really are.
About two weeks ago, this man with funny glasses told me I needed four crowns. Unfortunately he wasn't talking about crowns royalty wear, but the ones that go on your teeth. He basically told me that my teeth have fractures in them. He said something to the effect that "It's all part of the aging process."
"Aging is no fun." I thought to myself. " and very expensive. I was shocked at the bill for two hours of work and repairs to only half of them. You ever wonder why we age? Let's assume that the Bible is true. How did Adam and his descendents live so long if teeth give out in less than 50 years? He got really good at gumming his food? But my little problem is actually not even a problem when you compared it to others. Last week my son told me that his friend (8th grade classmate) just found that he has bone cancer in one of his legs. Is it okay for me to conclude that something has gone awry in nature and that this is not the way things should be?
The Bible documents a very mysterious event. Adam, supposedly the first man, and his immediate descendents had very long lives (unless your name happened to be Abel). The Bible claims that Adam lived 930 years. His son Seth lived 922 years. Noah, the guy who supposedly built the ark, lived 950 years. But look at the life expectancy chart below pre and post flood. Something major happen soon after the flood.
What could have accounted for the huge drop in life expectancy? Did these really unhealthy Kosher fast food franchises popped up soon after the flood? One thing is for sure; it doesn't help when God decrees something that isn't in our favor.
Note that before the flood, God makes this decree.
Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
-Genesis 6: 3-8
I have a theory. And the theory is simple. The Earth's magnetic field weakened after the great flood. If that is true, the Carbon-14 levels today would be much higher today than pre-flood times. But what other evidence supports a weaker magnetic field.?
We do know that the weaker our Earth's magnetic field becomes, the more exposed we become to cosmic rays. But what happens to the body when exposed to more cosmic rays?
Here is a transcript PBS' Nova ScienceNow:

Cosmic Ray Danger
Posted: December 2, 2010
NARRATOR: Produced by exploding stars, high-speed fragments of atoms called cosmic rays are known to tear through astronauts' cells, possibly making them cancerous.
JERRY LINENGER: You go to Mars; you're raising your risk of cancer. Lifelong. There are always innate risks to space travel, and there is no way to get around them. You just do your best to minimize those risks and control them where you can.
NARRATOR: To study how cosmic rays affect our bodies, NASA is making them on Earth, at Brookhaven National Labs. Here, Mary Helen Barcellos-Hoff uses them to bombard human cells. She gets her rays from a giant accelerator that whips subatomic particles to nearly the speed of light.
MARY BARCELLOS-HOFF (Brookhaven National Labs): And indeed when we look at cells that have been exposed to cosmic radiation, we can see each of these dots represent the DNA damage and all the damage is along the particle track. Because the damage is clustered, the damage is more difficult for the cell to deal with.
NARRATOR: And new research into cosmic rays points to another danger that could impact astronauts on long-term missions. They might become like this rat, which cannot find an underwater platform. To Barbara Shukitt-Hale, this rat represents a Mars explorer who might not be coming home.
BARBARA SHUKITT-HALE: Normally, rats have really good spatial memory. So a normal rat would be able to find that platform within five to ten seconds once he's been exposed to this test.
NARRATOR: But even after several trials, this rat just swims round and round until it gets rescued. Why? Because it has received a dose of cosmic rays no greater than a Mars astronaut might get, yet enough to cause a host of problems.
BERNARD RABIN: Problems in learning and memory, and recognition memory, and spatial memory, problems in terms of anxiety levels.
NARRATOR: Problems that make it seem the rats have jumped from youth to senility overnight.
RABIN: It was very surprising to find exposure to cosmic radiation accelerated the aging process. So a mission to Mars may result in accelerated aging, with all the consequences thereof.
So in theory it is possible the current carbon radiometric dating used to date objects today could be really off (dating this much older than they really are), because Earth's magnetic field was much stronger back then than today. The family lineages the Bible provides suggests that man is only 5000 to 6000 years old. But does Bible also also imply that Earth is that young too? Absolutely Not! Next time let's explore this.
