God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Single Path
By Lu Su
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. -Matthew 7:13,14
Many Bibles highlight scripture in red for anything spoken directly by Jesus Christ. I thought I would do the same. Please read what he said again. Notice, Jesus did not advocate that all paths lead to eternal life.
Probably the biggest point of contention about the Christian faith, when compared to all other world views, is this claim that eternal life comes ONLY through faith in Jesus Christ. Ask any Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or Atheist and none would agree. Some world religions may acknowledge that Christ may be one path to reach God, but none would say that he is the only path.
My best friend, brought up in the Hindu traditions, told me that this it's this exclusivity claim that Christians have that he has difficulty in accepting. I'm not sure if he thinks I belong to some type of elitist type of group -I hope not. I guess if we Christians could just back off on this particular claim, Christianity could be more readily accepted by more people. But the problem is that belief in Jesus Christ as the single path to God is a core belief to the Christian. Without this Christ, there is no path. Without this Christ, there is no Christian.
I do not believe that my friend's rejection of Christ (as the single path to God) is because of the Christian's exclusivity claim. Something more core to the Christian faith is being rejected and the exclusivity topic serves as an excuse (a diversion). Because all world views make exclusive claims. At the core of Atheists' world view is the exclusive claim that there is no God; Without accepting this exclusive core belief, you cannot be an Atheist. Same thing for the Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist; There are a set of core beliefs and practices that set you apart from all others.
Now the belief that it doesn't matter what you believe or practice, that all paths lead to God, is flat out wrong. Christians have a very narrow view that any spiritual journey that does not lead you to the cross of Jesus Christ is the wrong one. Notice that I said, "narrow view" and not a "narrow minded view"; there is a big difference. And right now, there seems to be a whole host of new philosophies being introduced. One quick way you can spot a new age spirituality type of philosophy that attempts to lead you away from the cross and down a wrong spiritual path is that there is no requirement to reject any of your current convictions.
These types of books, DVD's, and seminars are much easier sells, when you don't have to first convince large swaths of the population that what they currently believe is incorrect. So it's often pitched as, you can believe what you currently believe now plus this. If you are marketing a new product or philosophy, you generally want to pursue a very broad market. Without a broad market appeal, it's going to be tough getting couch space on talk shows and your materials into the Religion/Spirituality section of book stores.
When we consider marketing a new toy, if that toy only appeals to one sex, we have to carefully consider if the toy is going to be popular enough to overcome the automatic 50% loss in the customer base. Now if the toy is strictly for girls, the consideration to launch is scrutinized even more than a toy designed exclusively for boys. It seems very discriminatory, because it is. People that market toys are constantly making discriminating decisions based on our knowledge of what appeals to a particular gender and the appropriate age range.
You see, with a toy that appeals mainly to boys, you will still have a small portion of girls who will still want to have it (i.e. just like boy names). Moreover the age range of appeal for boys tend to be much larger. One of my sons bought the Han Solo's Millennium Falcon at my neighbor's garage sale for $5 bucks. I thought it was cool. The buttons for the laser gun sounds still worked, the top of it could pop off and you can see all the different rooms, plus a secret hiding compartments. Even though we both enjoyed the movie, my wife thought my son made a bad purchase. I thought he got an awesome deal. I guess boys never really grow out of toys. It's just as we get older, our toys tend to get more expensive. But when it comes to traditional girls toys (not including video, computer and board game), you are generally targeting an age group between 3 and 9 years of age. Usually at the age of 10 or 11, most girls will have totally moved out of the traditional toy category.
So back to the topic of exclusivity. As hard as the Unitarians in the West and people of the Bahai Faith in the East attempt to welcome all faiths and claim that there are multiple paths to God, there is no ALL inclusive faith out there. I know it sounds beautiful and appealing to belong to a group that attempts to include everyone, but it's just not possible. These types of faith cannot be all inclusive, because they must reject faiths that are exclusive in nature.
To claim that you have your way and I have my way, is to claim that what is true is a matter of preference. Truth doesn't work that way. What is true has nothing to do with our feelings or preferences. Plus I don't believe anyone really believes all paths lead to God.
There is a sect of Branch Davidians who still today practice child sacrifices. Another more extreme group believes in this plus eating their organs. Are you going to still tell me that it doesn't matter what you believe or practice? All paths lead to God? Surely some paths are wrong. Surely this path is wrong. Realize that Truth by its own nature is exclusive.
When a math problem is given, there tends to be only one true answer. If I were to ask you whether or not you have been faithful to your spouse, truth only has one version. When a suspect is being tried in court for a murder case, there is only one truth; there aren't multiple versions of the truth. By the nature of how truth works, when something is true, all contradictory answers are not true. So it is not out of the realm of possibilities that there is only one single path to God. Now for the Christian, Truth has been embodied into a person -Jesus Christ.
So back to my friend, if I don't think the exclusivity issue is the real reason for my friend's rejection of Christ (as the only path), what is the real reason? The reason why most people do not accept Jesus Christ is because they do not believe they need a Savior. A Savior saves you from something. Most people do not think they need any saving. It's because most people do not see the pending danger they are in, If you don't need to be rescued, you don't need a Savior.
With most world views, there is no saving going on. Or if there is, it's something that doesn't involve another person; You become your own savior. You must save yourself. You must find yourself. You save yourself out of the vicious cycle of birth and rebirth. You follow the Four Noble Truths. You must follow the Noble Eightfold path to end suffering. You must submit your will to Allah and accept that Mohammed is his messenger. With most world religions, there is either no saving going on, so there is no savior. With Christianity, God saves through his son Jesus Christ.
I'm sure you caught the news of the 33 miners trapped underground in Chile. All those trapped miners see the pending danger they are in. All of them are aware of how dire their situation has become. If someone were to provide them with a solution (a path to salvation), I doubt any would ask, "Why is this the only path?" Likewise, if you are in a burning building and a fire fighter (a Savior) breaks into your room (this world) and says, "Follow me," you aren't going to stay and deliberate, "Are you sure this the only way?" You're just happy that there is a way.
So if people are rejecting the need for a Savior, because they don't think they need saving (or it's something they need to do on their own), then it seems that it would be helpful to bring to light the dire situation we are in. Fortunately for us, God has revealed what our current situation looks like. I think it's worth examining. It could put you onto the true single path.
