God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
What is Grace? (part 5 of 5)
By Lu Su

For most of us, it's been more than 13 years since the movie Saving Private Ryan came out. So allow me to jog your memory and go over the plot. The setting for this war movie takes place in two locations: France during World War II and The General Lee's front lawn (but in this century, we call it Arlington National Cemetery). The opening scene takes place here as Ryan comes to find the memorial marker dedicated to Captain John Miller. Captain Miller is actually the main character in this movie and Private Ryan is a minor one, but is the recipient of grace. As Ryan is standing in front of Miller's memorial marker, the movie then flashes back to the invasion of Normandy on Omaha Beach. This day was also known as D-Day, the Sixth of June 1944

Incidentally, I had dated a girl whose uncle was there. If memory serves, I think he came in on the 5th or 6th wave. It's kind of interesting, this soldier never talk about the war. To all the family members and anyone who knew him, the subject of WW II was simply off limits. But If you recall, as soon as the movie came out in 1989, it was a huge hit. After deliberating on whether or not to see it, this war veteran eventually decides to go see it (by himself). A family member had asked him if Spielberg over dramatized the invasion scene. The answer from a person that was there was, "No, that's what it exactly looked like."

Meanwhile back in Washington, D.C., the condolence section of army headquarters discover that three brothers of the Ryan family have been killed almost at the same time. A fourth brother, James Francis Ryan, is somewhere in Normandy with the 101st Airborne Division. The Chief of Staff of the Army, General George Marshall, orders him found and to "get him the hell out of there." Captain John Miller and a small patrol of his Rangers are ordered to go find Private Ryan. One of Miller's men complain, realizing it's a big country and the mission very dangerous; he makes this comment, "What kind of deal is this? Eight of us for one of him?"

And then the adventure begins. They hit many road blocks. But their quest to save Private Ryan continues. They either circumvent or over come each obstacle and continue on with their mission. Eventually, they find the village, where remnants of the 101st are defending the bridge. But there is one small problem. After risking life and limb to save this one man, Ryan refuses to abandon his duty and his buddies to leave with them. Reluctantly, Captain Miller decides to stay and join in the defense. The prospects are bleak because they are out numbered and out gunned. Nevertheless, Miller organizes the men and plans the defense.

The Germans show up with Tiger tanks, several armored vehicles, and infantry. The fight for the town is vicious. The Americans fall, one by one in their attempts to defend the bridge. Captain Miller is fatally shot here on the bridge. The scene right before the one you are about to watch shows Miller, though dying, doesn't gave up -even as a German Tiger tank approaches the bridge. But the tank is blown up at the last minute by a P-51 just as American reinforcements arrive.

Miller, at the end of his life, gives Ryan a life mission – "Earn this.... Earn it"

A gift (grace) was given to Ryan. This unmerited favor is bestowed onto this Private. Two other qualities of grace is that it is costly. And grace is indispensable to the recipient; in other words it is absolutely necessary gift one needs to receive in order to flourish. Now if I were to give you say a pencil (sharpened or unsharpened... your choice), this would NOT be considered grace. Is it a gift? Yes. Is it unmerited favor. Yes, you haven't done anything that warrants receiving a pencil. But here, it fails the last two important qualities of grace. Grace is costly. Grace is indispensable. A pencil isn't costly to me. And a pencil isn't indispensable to you. You don't need a pencil to flourish because you probably have many writing instruments at your disposal.

Captain Miller's last words were, "Earn this." Grace is totally unlike religion. Religion teach, "You do this now and then later you will earn that prize." Grace is, "Here is the prize in advance, before you have done anything to warrant receiving it, now go earn it." God's gift in sending his son Jesus Christ was very costly and indispensable to us. Without receiving Christ, we are dead to God.

Now that you are a recipient of God's grace or maybe one day you will be, what do we do with this power (grace) now that we have it? The answer is found in the Bible. Old Testament or the New Testament. God's heart continues to go out to the fatherless, widows, and foreigners (usually the group that gets the short end of the stick). During that time and still today, these are the most vulnerable groups of people.

Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. -Exodus 22:22

He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. -Deuteronomy 10:18

Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge. -Deuteronomy 24:17

When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. -Deuteronomy 24:19

When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. -Deuteronomy 24:21

“Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.”
Then all the people shall say, “Amen!” -Deuteronomy 27:19

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. -Psalm 68:5

Learn to do right; seek justice.
   Defend the oppressed.
Take up the cause of the fatherless;
plead the case of the widow. -Isaiah 1:17

This is what the LORD says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place. -Jeremiah 22:3

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other. -Zechariah 7:10

So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the LORD Almighty. -Malachi 3:5

Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. -1 Timothy 5:3

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. -James 1:27

The above passages are but just a few found in the Bible. Notice that they are not pitched as suggestions. For what Captain John Miller did for Private Ryan, pails in comparison to what God has done for us. God has lavished grace upon us. Now go earn this.
