God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
A Single Path (intro)
By Lu Su
A few days ago, my youngest son Daniel tugged on my pant leg and said that he was thirsty. While I was pouring a glass of milk, he was standing next to me carefully watching as I filled his glass.
"I wish we had a brown cow." said Daniel.
There was a slight pause as I tried to process this request. I wasn't sure why he said that. But I am sure that my wife and neighbors would be quite displeased if we had a cow of any color. Just what our family needs, another four legged beast wandering about, shedding 24/7, and doing a couple numbers in our backyard and multiple times during the day. But you can't fault a six year old for not being practical; it's one of the fringe benefits of being a child..
"Okay, why do you wish we had a brown cow?" I asked.
"So we can have chocolate milk." he replied.
"Chocolate milk comes from brown cows?" I asked, "Where did you learn this?"
"You didn't know that dad? Aunt Carol told me this on the camping trip," answered Daniel.
It seems that my generation likes to tell the next generation tales that involve cows. About a month ago one of my sons asked me who I thought was the bravest person in the world. I didn't even have to think about it. I told him that it was the first person to ever drink cow's milk. There had been this perplexed look on my son's face, because I think he was expecting me to name a famous explorer or conqueror. After he asked me why, I explained to him that at some point in history, two guys probably crawled up this hill to spy out this wild large four legged creature. One of them must have observed that the beast had a large thing hanging beneath the beast -a large organ hanging below the beast and near its two hind legs.
One must have said to the other, "I dare you to sneak up to that animal, squeeze that big thing underneath its legs, and drink whatever comes out of it."
My son honestly believed the way to obtaining chocolate milk is through a brown cow. Daniel desired end result was chocolate milk. The single path to chocolate milk required going through the utters of a brown cow.
In my last column, I wrote, "Because of God's love for us, he provided a SINGLE path back to him."
Could I be making the same mistake as my son Daniel? When I wrote the above sentence, I knew full well that the majority of the readership would disagree. Since there are multiple brown cows out there, it would seem logical that there are multiple paths in obtaining chocolate milk. This is why most people do not believe in a single path.
For those who consider themselves Atheist (belief in no God), they would claim that my initial premise that God existence is incorrect; Thus any conclusions based on an invalid premise is meaningless. For the Atheist, there is no overall meaning to life. So talk of a purpose, destiny, and a path to obtain both is nonsensical to them.
For those of us that consider ourselves Theists (belief in God or gods), we don't agree on origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. We don't agree on who God is. We also don't even agree on what the final destination is (And some people will not even agree on what the definition of "is" is.). All Theistic world views prescribe a path, but we are not in agreement on what is the correct path. To claim that there is a proper path, could readily be accepted by most Theists. But to claim that there is only a single path and that path is through Jesus Christ would NOT be accepted by most Theists on Earth.
For those who consider themselves Agnostic (belief in God is either unknown or unknowable), they would either disagree or at best say, "maybe." If God is unknown or unknowable, then certainly a path to God would also be unknowable or at best unreliable. I find this to be the easiest world view to subscribe to.
You see, Theists has the challenge to prove that God exists. Atheists have the even more difficult challenge to prove that God does not exist (e.g. prove to me that God isn't hiding under a rock on Saturn's largest moon Titan). But the Agnostics only needs to prove that they don't know. Is there a God? I don't know. Is there a path? I don't know. Understand that I'm not trying to make fun of the Agnostic. The answer, "I don't know" is probably an honest and true one. But I would urge you to explore it. Because my world view tells me the path your take now will effect yoru destiny. Well, let's start with something we do know.
Can praying, chanting, worshiping or doing anything with a rock give me access to God? How about an intricately carved rock? Almost all world views will conclude that a rock or any inanimate object does not has the ability to grant us access to God. Well, how about living things?
I've always enjoyed movies that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. Is it possible that the path to God requires heartfelt gratitude to Arnold and his accomplishments? I think John Travolta is a pretty good actor too and a better dancer. Could deep love and appreciation for either of these two actors gain me access to God? Is it possible that in order to reach God you need to first become a fan (a disciple) of one of these two men? Do either of these two famous men have some sort of pull or influence with God that can affect my ability to reach God? No matter what your world view is, I believe all would say, "No. Neither Arnold or John can grant you access to God."
Let's raise the level of difficulty of the question. Can a renowned spiritual leader like Buddha, Mohammed, the Dalai Lama, or the Pope grant us access to God? Is there ANY human spiritual leader (live or dead) that can facilitate such a meeting? Notice I'm not asking you if they can point us to God; I'm asking if they themselves are special in a way that forces us to go through them in order to reach God.
If the answer is no, then what you are saying is that not all paths can take you to God. Access cannot be granted through inanimate objects, famous actors, or even spiritual leaders. This is a direct conflict to some world views that teach that all paths lead to God. But the Christian has an even bigger conflict.
The Christian world view teaches that access to God must come through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Without Christ, there is no access to God. This claim is a point of contention with ALL other world views. Can't Christians back off a little on this? Why are Christians so hung up on this single character? Let's explore this next time.
