What is Grace? (part 1 of 3)
By Lu Su
In my faith journey, there are three concepts that I have come across that greatly help me understand Christianity. These three concepts are:
1. What sin is
2. What truth is.
3. And what grace can do.
All three are rooted in the premise that God exists. If you reject this premise, then then sin and grace does not exist. Truth then becomes relative. These very deep theological concepts need to be anchored in something, or they have no meaning.
The following short passage is found in the book of Ephesians, which is located in the later part of the Bible. I want to point out that the Bible is the most translated and published piece of literature on Earth; And no matter what faith journey you are on, it's worth examining. The passage accurately diagnoses what is wrong with man (sin), why Jesus (truth) came, and what grace is. Last week, if you recall, I described grace is like mercy, but better. It's unmerited favor from God. The paragraph then ends with what grace does for us and our purpose here on Earth. In other words this passage summarizes the Christian faith.
Let me give you the historical backdrop of this passage. Saul of Tarsus, who later became the Apostle Paul, wrote this letter around 62 AD (about 20 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ). Paul is one of the most prolific writers of the Bible -probably because he spent a good chunk of his ministry in prison. Approximately 1/3 of the New Testament (2nd half of the Bible) is made up of his writings. The title "Apostle" is reserved for the early Christian church leaders who actually saw and encountered Jesus. While imprisoned in Rome, Paul writes this letter to the newly established church in Ephesus. This city is located in modern day Turkey. Ephesus was a city within the Roman Empire, and at the time it was the second most populated city -with Rome being numero uno. It is important for you to realize that this passage was directed towards Christians.
1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. -Ephesians 2:1-10
The very first sentence, seem harsh. "You were dead" establishes a premise that most other religions reject. When Paul says, "you were dead", he didn't mean physically dead; he meant spiritually dead. This is why Jesus taught people that they needed to be born again -he was talking about a spiritual rebirth. What made us dead to God was our transgressions and sins. There is that "sin" word again.
Our modern society doesn't do sin any more. People are no longer "sinful these days". We now say they did something illegal. And I have noticed that when a sinful act is particularly evil, society then diagnoses them as being sick. So here is the thing, if man is just spiritually sick, then it's possible to get better on your own. Isn't this correct? If you are just sick, then with a little dose of this or dab of that, might enable you to get better on your own. But if the premise is that you are dead, then there is no doctor or medical facility that can help you. If you are dead, you don't need treatment. You need a resurrection. Christianity doesn't prescribe that we need a doctor or some type of treatment plan. Christianity teaches that man is in desperate need for God. The prescription is accepting Jesus Christ.
Verse two talks about Satan -the guy that helped us get into this mess in the first place. Verse three concludes that we deserve wrath from God. The King James version of this verse says we are "children of wrath". When I think of wrath, I immediately think of The Wrath of Kahn. But wrath is more than revengeful anger towards Captain James T. Kirk.
When Saddam Hussein was on put on trial, one of the charges brought against him was the alleged murders of males of a certain age range from a village where Saddam was almost assassinated in. But wasn't Saddam just doing what came natural? Didn't Saddam determine what is legal and illegal in his country? When you or a loved one is harmed, wrath is the first thing that tends to pour out. After Saddam was harmed, he came out swinging -100% wrath and 0% love. Fortunately for mankind, we don't have a God who behaves like Saddam.
Verse 4 is the tipping point for this paragraph; "but because of his great love for us, God," And the rest of it is good news. It is my hope that this week, you memorize this simple sentence "but because of his great love for us, God,". Have you lost your way? I've got really good news to share. It's all in the later part of Paul's paragraph. More next week.
