What is Grace? (intro)
By Lu Su

If you hang out with people that claim to be followers of Jesus Christ, this word "grace" is bound to pop up. What is grace? Some churches have the word "grace" in their name. Most people have heard about this old hymn called "Amazing Grace". I also have a niece named Grace. And my family says grace before we chow down to dinner.

Merriam Webster offers these three definitions for the word grace:

1. Unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification.

2. A virtue coming from God.

3. A state of sanctification enjoyed through divine grace.

While I don't disagree with any of the above definitions, I'm not a big fan of any of them -especially when it comes to understanding what grace means to a Christian. The first definition is probably the best definition of the three, but it introduces two very theological heavy weight concepts "regeneration" and "sanctification". My hunch is if anyone is looking up the word "grace" because they don't understand it, I doubt if they are going to understand what regeneration or sanctification is.

The second definition teaches us that grace is a virtue and that it comes from God; though true, I find the definition way too vague. God has many virtues. The knowledge that grace is a virtue that comes from God, doesn't help most people understand what grace is.

The third definition is the worst of the three, because it introduces the word "sanctification" and then uses the word "grace" to define itself. I thought the practice of using the same word to define itself was frowned upon in our society. I would think either Merriam or Webster should have caught that. What is grace? Well, grace is grace. (I probably could create a new dictionary in no time, if we relax that protocol).

Why do I want to talk about grace? Why this particular subject? It's definitely not a common subject. I bet it's never came up in a conversation at work. Well, the reason I want to talk about grace is because for most Christians, once we understand and experience grace, it seems to serve as a catalyst that allows us to accept Jesus Christ as a savior. A savior is a person that saves you from something. But save you from what? I'll get to that soon. I say, "understand and experience" because understanding alone (just head knowledge) is sufficient.

I had a great English teacher in my youth. He was one of those teachers that did more than teach. He inspired. Consequently his class was one of the few classes I looked forward in attending during my stint in high school. The two points he tried to drill in his students was1) You can't write what you don't know. Mr. Walsh said the phrase, "You can't write what you don't know" about 15 times straight. But each time he said it, he struck a pose. It was kind of hilarious. Try to imagine this stout elderly teacher with a buzz cut and who had a neck about the same width of his head, Vogueing (like Madonna) around the classroom's dance floor. And at the same time saying, "You can't write what you don't know" with all these different voice inflections. He did an excellent job. It's 30 years later and I still remember that phrase as if he said it yesterday.

The second thing Mr. Walsh encouraged us to do is when we write, write at a level where a 5th grader can comprehend. So I just asked my resident 6th grade graduate what does "catalyst" mean. He didn't know. So I see that I have already failed and probably should not have used that word catalyst in describing grace.

Many people have head knowledge of who Jesus is. But most people do not have any desire to accept him as a savior. It's probably a kin to the speed limit signs that dot our landscape. People know and comprehend what they are, but most people have no desire to follow the signs -unless the consequences are high enough. And it seems to me the consequences of breaking the speed limit have gotten much higher over the years (e.g. steeper fines, points on your drivers license, higher insurance premiums for a few years). It is my hope that by the time I finish this article, I'll have convinced you the consequences of not accepting Christ as your savior has a much higher penalty that our judicial system can mete out. But I don't want to go negative and want to stay positive. I want to talk about grace, because once people understand and experience it, it has the power to transform.

For me, I think the closest single word synonym for grace is mercy. I think people in our society are far more familiar with the word "mercy" than "grace". Grace is like mercy, but it works a little differently (more positive). Mercy is NOT getting something you deserve. Mercy is like a pardon issued by either the President or a Governor to a convict. Grace is getting something you do NOT deserve. Got it? Mercy is not getting something you deserve, but grace is getting something you do not deserve. I think the next single word that helps define what grace is, is the word "gift". Grace is a gift.

My favorite two word definition of grace is "unmerited favor". It's easier to say than "getting something you don't deserve". So now you hopefully have a better idea of what grace is. It's similar to mercy, but better. It's a gift from God. It's unmerited favor. We have neither done anything nor is there anything we can do anything to deserve this gift.

I want you to read a passage in the Bible that talks about grace. If you were to google "grace in the Bible", this passage would most likely come up. (It's keyword dense for the word, "grace").

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. -Ephesians 2:1-10

The above paragraph is very radical. It's radical because it provides a view point that is different from all other religions and world views that are out there. Much of it hinges on who Jesus Christ is and this transformative power grace has. Next time, let's look more closely at this passage, because I know on the first reading it just bounces off most people (the armor they've spent a life time putting on is just too strong). But if you give grace a chance, it has transformative power that works from the inside (way below the skin).
