One Try or Multiple Tries?
By Lu Su
Reincarnation seems to be a popular belief among many "spiritual" people. Many major religions and many new age religions embrace this concept. For example, Tenzin Gyatso is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet. He claims to be the 14th Dalai Lama. This means he has been reincarnated 14 times! Coupled with colorful robes and the title, "Your Holiness" and how cool is that? Many people believe the Dalai Lamas are very special people because they have postponed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth in order to serve humanity.
I personally think many people embrace reincarnation because if you don't make the grade is this life, it's nice to have another try in another life (if reincarnation is true, then there still is hope for Presidential contender Sarah Palin). But how does the concept of reincarnation square with Christianity? Didn't Jesus himself used words like, "born again"? Wasn't Buddha teaching people a concept of rebirth way before Jesus started his ministry?
Well yes to both those questions, but the short answer is that Christianity flat out rejects reincarnation. And I can see that there are certain versus in the Bible that are confusing and often mis-interperted as reincarnation; but I've not found anywhere in the Bible that says that the dead get to return and come back as another man or animal. There are many verses in the Bible (New and Old Testament) that support this claim, but I feel the clearest verse in Scripture that defends this claim is:
Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, -Hebrews 9:27
So if the Bible is true, you will die only once and then be judged. Obviously if you are only going to die once, then reincarnation is not going to happen. Because of this fact, I hope you can understand the urgency many Christians have in sharing the Gospel - a message of hope and salvation. Another reason why Christianity directly butts heads with the concept of reincarnation is actually answered in the very next verse.
so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. -Hebrews 9:28
The reason why Christians cannot adopt this concept of reincarnation, is because it nullifies Christ's sacrifice. If we had multiple or infinite number of tries, to do some type of good work and get it "right", then there would be no need for God to send his son Jesus Christ. Why get all sweaty, bloody and go die a gruesome death on a cross? If man was capable of entering Heaven, Nirvana, Paradise, Samsara, Oneness, or Moksha on his own? there would be no need for a Savior. Many religions teach that you are reincarnated in order to PAY for your past life's misdeeds and you will continue to PAY until you eventually get it right. Christianity teaches that man is unable to PAY (no matter how hard he tries) for his misdeeds (sin); so God PAYS and brings salvation to those who simply accept his Son.
