Jericho Road Homeless Shelter in Paterson, NJ
By Lu Su
Jericho Road is an organization that I've gotten myself involved in. Hope you can check out this video that was just posted a few days ago.
Ben Dunfee is a friend of mine. A few years ago he had a vision and shared it. Men, woman, and families in the surrounding community took hold of that vision, came together and with the sweat, tears, and with very limited financial resources fixed up an abandoned and boarded up home (two houses down from the church he leads). Now this house that sits on the corner of Jefferson and 9th Street in Paterson, NJ is being used to rescue men. Men that society has rejected and would deem highly defective.
I've been in Jericho Road (JR) several times, so I can vouch that it's really being used for the purposes shown on the video. What the video doesn't show you that on a 75 degree day, the third floor goes to about 85 degrees. Yesterday it almost hit 100 degrees here in NJ. So I know a home without a single a/c unit in it, transformed itself into a sauna.
I've met the men at JR. They're real men -all with pretty heart breaking life stories. What most seem to have in common is a lack of a father figure growing up and then excessive drugs or alcohol use which usually led to a job loss. When their bank account hit zero, they basically lost their car, then their home. Some, unable to provide, lost their families too. After being and talking with many of these men, I realized how many things that I just took for granted. (e.g. a bank account, transportation, and I didn't realize if you have a size 32 waist line, woman's size 8 jeans can work too).
Ben basically takes men off the street, provides them more than just a bed and food, but provides them a "home" and a sense of belonging that I believe most state run shelters do not provide. Through a regimented program, strict curfews, and encouragement and help in finding work, he with the support of the other men in the shelter, cleans them up, gets them off drugs. He also takes the time to share the Gospel message with them. And I know the combination of all these things have restored many men. The average length of stay at JR is about 3 months. Most of the men that have departed continue to be productive and live independently.
At this time Jericho Road only has one full time staff member (Ben); and when I say full time staff member that doesn't necessarily means he gets paid regularly. All funds to run this operation come from charitable donations. At this time JR take no financial aid from either the state or federal government. Last Winter, which was very cold, we almost had the electricity and heat turned off because JR was several months behind on the payments.
At the end of the video Ben briefly talks about a basketball program (called SALUTE Basketball) that is starting up. Schools let out in a few weeks and we are hoping to get this new ministry program geared for the youth of Paterson off the ground. It's quite amazing, Paterson is an inner city and all the nearby parks don't have a single basketball hoop in them. Ben last summer put one of those portable ones up on the street and within no time there was like 40 kids playing street basketball. And that is how he got the vision for this new basketball ministry. Fred is about 6' 4" and is one of the last men to be shown on the video. In his youth he actualy use to play point guard for division one school down in Texas. But now, Fred who was formerly homeless, will be heading up the basketball program and giving the youth in Paterson pointers on the game.
As always, your local church, synagogue, or house of worship should be your first priority when it comes to giving; but If you are in the position and desire to also honor God with your wealth here at Jericho Road, I assure any contribution no matter how small would be put to very good use.
