God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Small Size Heroes
By Lu Su

Last Saturday on May 21st, I bet most Americans were busy about their everyday routines and didn't realize that Armed Forces Day came and went. But this weekend is Memorial Day weekend. This is a far more recognized holiday. Because it is an official federal holiday, stock markets are closed and most of us will not have to go to school or work. Memorial day is observed on the last Monday of May; this year it's on May 30, 2011.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. That day was designed to commemorate Union and Confederate soldiers who fought in that very ugly American Civil War. Sometime after World War I, the holiday got renamed to Memorial Day in honor of all Americans who have died in any war.

It's kind of interesting what we do here in America. We seem to have some sort of suppressed need to commercialize our holidays. The more commerce and activity we do, with the holiday serving as the background theme, the more likely we remember it. So the holiday that begun after the civil war as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation has now in the early 21st century, morphed into something that's devoted to shopping, family get-together's, barbecues, festivities, and maybe a trip to the beach or an event. Understand that I'm not against doing any of those things, but I do find it interesting.

last world war one soldier

A couple of months ago, we hit an interesting milestone. Our last World War I soldier passed away. Above is a picture of U.S. Army soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment carrying the casket of Army Cpl. Frank Woodruff Buckles, our last American World War I veteran. His funeral ceremony took place at Arlington National Cemetery on March 15, 2011.

But before you get busy attending to your weekend festivities, I hope you can take a full minute to intensely study the next two pictures. These small size heroes have given us (the American people) something very precious to them.

I know Memorial Day is traditionally a day to remember soldiers that have died in war. Yes, without question or doubt they should be remembered and honored for their sacrifice. Freedom is never free. There is always a bill at the end. One that is always paid with a lot of tears and broken hearts. We seem to stick these precious small size heroes, who don't get any recognition for their contribution, with the bill. Most of us will go about our busy lives and never in our life extend a word of gratitude to them. I hope you can extend one day of remembrance, appreciation, and admiration for sacrifice thousands of small size heroes have made for us.
