God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Finding God From the Dark Side (part 3)
By Lu Su

When you look at the miracles that Jesus Christ had performed and divide them into three categories, you'll see that most of the miracles Jesus did related to healing.

Miracle Category Number of Miracles
Healing Miracles 23
Miracles Showing Power Over Nature 9
Miracles of Raising the Dead 3

Jesus most likely performed more than 35 miracles. We only know of 35 of them, because that was what his disciples choose to write about. The Apostle John, one of Jesus' best friend who was with Him during Jesus' 3 year ministry, ends his gospel message with this note:

"Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written." -John 21:25

Because of Jesus' ability to heal people (and maybe also because of his lower than Walmart pricing) He attracted large crowds. Of the 23 healing miracles, all of them pertained to restoring individuals (people). Though I am sure Jesus was able, but I am unable to find an incident in the Bible where Jesus uses his powers to heal sick or diseased animals, birds, or insects (including sloths or even a Hindu sacred holy cow). Of the 9 miracles showing power over nature, none of them were to heal something broken in nature. Of the 3 miracles Jesus performed in raising the dead, all three were bringing back to life the life of a person (i.e. Jairus's daughter, Window's son at Nain, and Jesus' friend Lazarus). None were to bring back to life a beloved pet or an important farm animal.

When you look at all the miracles performed by Jesus, you can safely conclude that all of them were performed for the benefit of God's image bearers. You can also conclude that all of healing miracles brought a restoration back to body.

In Genesis we learn that God made man in his own image. It was not until after Jesus came, was it revealed to us that there is only one God AND that this God is triune in nature. In Matthew, we learn that this triune God consists of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. In Thessalonians (a book in the later part of the Bible) it teaches us that man is also triune in nature too and we consist of a body, soul, and spirit. But let's try to step back and try to see the big picture on what is going on.

Jesus performed at least 23 healing miracles that brought physical restoration back to at least 23 people. But you don't have to send your only Son (part of the God-head) to do that. Like in the past, God could have simply empower a prophet or even Justin Bieber for a popular task like that. You would only send your Son to Earth to die a gruesome death for a much bigger mission. That big mission was not to bring healing to the bodies of 23 individuals, but to bring salvation to all who would be willing to receive it. But the trouble was, man's spirit wasn't just a little sick and needed a couple asprin and bed rest. The Scriptures teach us that man's spirt was dead.

You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. - Colossians 2:13

I don't know what cartoon my kids got the line from, but I often hear them say, "It's dead! D.E.D." Indeed dead is dead. But Jesus Christ's life, death and life again brought about opportunity for our spirit to be resuscitated back to life through a personal with Him.Just like Christ is an essential part of the God head, our spirit is an essential part of us. As you will see soon, without your spirit, you would not be you.

Now of the 23 healing miracles that Jesus performed, five (5) of them were to remove evil spirits (demon possession). Statistians would say that is a "statistically significant number". Think about it. How many different ways are there for our body to be sick or not working correctly? More than a hundred, thousand, ten-thousand? But yet, 5 out of 23 (more than 20%) were to remove an evil spirit(s) that had entered a person. Since there are only five cases that we know about where Jesus removed an evil spirit(s) that possessed a person, it won't take long. Let's read them and see what we can learn about God from looking at the dark side.

Jesus Heals the Mute -Matthew 9:32-34

While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.  And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”

But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”

Jesus and Beelzebul -Matthew 12:22-28

Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”

Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit -Mark 1:21-28

They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

“Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”  The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit -Mark 9:17-29

When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

“You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”

Jesus Meets Legion -Luke 8:26-39

Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs. Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “ What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me.” For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert. And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “ Legion”; for many demons had entered him. They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss.

Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission. And the demons came out of the man and entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported it in the city and out in the country. The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened. Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well. And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned. But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying, “Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

I see that this essay has ran long. I've already exceeded the five second attention span most people have for reading or listening to something educational. But there is a wealth of information you can learn about God from just observing the behavior and words of those from the dark side. Let's save the commentaries for next time.
