God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Render to God matters of right and wrong
By Lu Su
Gay men have found their way into leadership roles and unfortunately it's often met with great controversy. Gay men in the military continues to be a contentious issue as the Pentagon attempts to reformulate a formal policy. Not too long ago in the State of New Jersey, we had a married governor who admitted having an extramarital affair with another man. This news coincided with Governor McGreevey's resignation and then gave the writers of the Tonight Show plenty of material for weeks. And just last week, the largest Lutheran governing body reinstated two gay ministers to their clergy roster. If you missed the news, here's a quick blurb on it from the Associated Press -AP.
ATLANTA – A gay Atlanta pastor and his partner who have been at the center of a battle over the treatment of gay clergy by the nation's largest Lutheran denomination are being reinstated to the denomination's clergy roster, church officials announced Tuesday.
The Rev. Bradley Schmeling and his partner, the Rev. Darin Easler, have been approved for reinstatement, the Chicago-based Evangelical Lutheran Church in America said in a news release. The approval came roughly eight months after the denomination voted to allow gays and lesbians in committed relationships to serve as clergy, and just weeks after the ELCA's church council officially revised the church's policy on gay ministers.
The part that I found interesting was that only under a certain condition, could gays and lesbians serve as clergy. That condition was that they were in a "committed relationship." So it seems that if they were in an uncommitted relationship, then it would be wrong and thus they would never been reinstated. Then is the opposite (being in a committed relationship) makes everything right? Another question that entered my mind is that isn't it possible to have multiple committed relationships? In college, I had a room mate that was very committed to three different woman; his conscious was not bothered by it at all. A quick hop over to the ELCA's web site and I found my answer.
"After a great deal of passionate, but respectful debate, the assembly recorded a 60 percent vote (note: only a majority was needed to adopt any of these resolutions) that the ELCA should commit itself to finding ways to allow congregations that choose to do so to recognize, support, and hold publicly accountable couples who wish to have lifelong, monogamous, same-gender relationships."
So multiple committed relationships are NOT allowed. Rev. Schmeling and Rev. Easler must have a "monogamous" type of relationship. Then other questions entered my mind. Does this ruling only apply to "same-gender" relationships? Surely there could also be Lutheran clergy couples who wish to have lifelong, monogamous, different-gender relationship. Did the ELCA conclude that homosexual acts are sinful, but gay and lesbians can continue to serve as clergy? Or did the ELCA saying homosexual acts are not sinful, so of course gay couples can continue to serve as clergy? I was unable to discern answers to those types of questions on their site.
I normally don't read blogs, but I wanted to read about people's opinion and reaction to this controversy. After reading about an hour's worth of what people had to say about the matter, it became very apparent to me that the great majority of the people commenting on this subject, failed to address the issue at hand. Many bloggers treat this controversy as an equal rights issue. Many commented that it was time that the Church shed "traditional" views about sexual orientation and get "current" with societal norms. Other bloggers made comments stating this controversy is simply a social political issue. Another argued that there lacked any pragmatic reasons why gay ministers cannot serve as ministers.
Make no mistake about this. The controversy with gay and lesbian ministers is a moral issue. Is it right or wrong? Or perhaps it is neither? Or could this be a relative issue -right for one person but wrong for another? Note that this happens to be the same issue that confronted the Anglican Church in 2003. Certainly a gay man could make an excellent General or Admiral. Certainly a gay man could be a great Governor. But is homosexual acts compatible with Scripture and for those who are to preach, live and demonstrate it?
If you have been with me on this journey, we know that three major world views: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam believe that what is right and wrong is ultimately determined by God. We don't get to determine what is morally right and wrong, God does. Lutherans are Christians. Since what is right and wrong is determined by God, when an issue like this surfaces, Christians (which include Lutherans) should always seek God's will on such a matter.
So where has God revealed his will? Christians believe that there is a single authoritative source where God has revealed his will to us. That source is a known as the Holy Bible -also called God's Word. Everything Gods wants us to know about himself has been revealed to us in this single book. Many of us Christians today get into unnecessary controversy because we lack a deep Biblical foundation. Realize that when Jesus was attacked (tempted) by Satan, Jesus used Scripture to defend himself (i.e. "It is written"). How many of us can quote Scripture if we get in a jam? Why is the Bible unique and so authoritative to the Christian?
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. -Hebrews 1:1-3
What the verses above are telling us that God in the past used prophets to speak to our forefathers who then spoke to us; but in the last days (and we are in the last days now) God spoke to us by his Son. Remember, this was accomplished by God incarnating and going to the cross. "He sat down" is symbolic that he finished what he set out to do. The purpose in why the Son of God entered our 3 dimensional + time world is now complete. Remember the last thing Jesus said while hanging on the cross?
So even if a bunch of prophets spring up tomorrow and get a lot of air time on CNN, Ellen, or Oprah's couch, what they have to say may be interesting and even true, but what they have to tell us certainly won't supercede what the Old Testament prophets or God's Son had to say on the matter. New books will be written and may make the New York Times best seller list, but whatever that author has to say will certainly NOT supercede in authority what is in the Bible has to say. If there is a conflict between a new philosophy and the Bible, the Bible wins (for the Christian); because the Bible is God's Word and thus it is authoritative.
So when Christians face a moral dilemma, we should turn to the Bible to discern God's will on the matter -particularly on controversial issues. If Christians get into an argument with each other, they should ask each other, "Show me where in the Bible verses of Scripture that support your view."
Now if right and wrong is determined by God and not by man, then my personal views on this matter (is it moral to have gay and lesbian ministers?) doesn't matter. My opinion could be wrong, but what matters most is God's will. Then again my opinion could be right, but what matters most is God's will. So what I am saying is that when it comes to right and wrong, it doesn't matter what my opinion is, what matters is God's opinion (his will). God sets the standard. Anything contrary to God's will is called sin.
Has God spoken on this very controversial matter? I'm going to turn the tables around and ask myself the same question. Show me in the Scripture where God has revealed his will on this particular matter. Now before you read on, I want to make it clear that the next few paragraphs ONLY apply to God's people. God's people is defined by those who obey his commands. With that really restrictive definition of who God's people are, it should then be obvious that the great majority of the people on Earth are NOT God's people. Yes, God created every person. God loves every person; but only the ones that listen and follow God are consider his people. This is the Biblical point of view.
So if you are not one of God's people, the following paragraphs do NOT apply to you. You are then free to determine right and wrong on your own terms (i.e. majority vote, what others teach you, how you "feel" about it, other scriptures that you deem true, etc...)
There was a time when God through a series of miracles, took his people out of Egypt and brought them to the promise land. Now before God's people entered the promise land, God spoke directly to Moses. God told Moses that the people of Egypt and the people in this new land, live and practice their sexuality in a certain way. God instructed Moses to tell the people that MY PEOPLE are NOT to live or practice the things that these people do.
There are parts of the Bible that are rated G, PG, R, and even X. I believe this particular Chapter would get a rating somewhere between R and X. Because of the very strong sexual content, I'm not going to include it in this article, but will provide you the link for you to read for yourself what God has commanded. Or go pull the Bible off your bookshelf (almost all households in American have one). Then I'll leave it up to you to determine if God has expressed his will on this controversy. The verses of Scripture are found in Leviticus 18 . Leviticus is the 3rd book of the Bible and it's one of the books of Moses.
One thing I found very interesting was that unlike the ten (10) Commandments, here God gives the command and then he takes time to supply an explanation on why not to do it. Our nation, which was once considered a Christian nation, has actually enacted laws at one time or another that express every one of these same command that God's gave for his people. Furthermore, many States have even passed more restrictive laws, which prohibits you from marrying your cousin.
Our laws may change one day and legally all those commands in Leviticus may one day be socially permissible; but as God's people, we are NOT allowed to engage in those practices. So after reading Leviticus 18, tell me which commands are now antiquated and should no longer apply? Which of these commands that were morally wrong to God over 3000 years ago, are no longer morally wrong today?
In conclusion, my mom happens to be the best French kisser. And simply entering into a "committed relationship" with my mother doesn't suddenly make it morally right.
