God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Finding God From the Dark Side (part 2)
By Lu Su

Last time, I provided a proof that God exists because evil exists. It's a simple syllogistic proof. For most of us, 9th grade was a long long time ago. In a place far far away. So how about a quick refresher course on the Law of Syllogism? An opportunity like this doesn't come to your eyes that often!

Basically the Law of Syllogism allows you to state a conclusion from two true conditional statements when the conclusion of one statement is the hypothesis of the other statement. Huh? Most of us in our youth were taught this type of logic via symbols: If (p implies q) and (q implies r), we conclude (p implies r).

p = The canal is open.
q = The ship can go through the canal.
r = The company can transport their goods.

If p then q and if q then r, then If p then r, so:

If the canal is open, then the ship can go through the canal.
If the ship can go through the canal, then the company can transport their goods.

You can use the law of syllogism to conclude that:

If the canal is open, then the company can transport their goods.

Likewise, we can use the same law to show that if Evil exists, God must exist.

1. If Evil exists, then Good exist.
2. If Evil and Good exists, then a Moral Law exists in order for us to differentiate between the two.
3. If a Moral Law exists, then a moral law giver (God) must exist.

If the above three statements are true, then two conclusions you can make:

If Evil exists, God exists.
If God does not exist, then Evil does not exist.

If you do not believe that God exists and believe that evil exists, then the last two statements are not going to sit right with you. But In order for the two statements above to be false, then at least one of the above first three statements MUST be false.

So far, I have not encountered anyone who doubts the existence of good and evil, so I'm going to skip #1 and not go through the exercise to convince you that good and evil exists. I'll just leave that to the newspapers and CNN to show you that evil does exist. #2 state that if Evil and Good exists, then a Moral Law exists. I think to most people, this is obvious that a moral law exists which allows us to conclude that something is evil, good, or better. But I know the existence of a moral law is not obvious for everyone.

I recently watched Castaway starring Tom Hanks again. It was my second time seeing the movie and my kids first time. For some inexplicable reason, after the movie and for about a week after seeing the movie, my boys started screaming out to each other "Wilson!" So, say both of us were shipped wrecked on a deserted island without Wilson.

Since we are alone on the island, there is no established government and thus there are no legal laws on the island to say if something is legal or illegal.. Now if neither legal laws in place and if moral laws exist, we could steal each other's coconuts and neither one of us would have done anything evil or immoral; this is because moral laws do not exist. If moral laws do not exist, then if I had the only tool on the island that enable us to open the coconuts, I would have not done anything evil or immoral if I didn't share the tool with you as you slowly dehydrated to death; nothing evil is occurring here because moral laws do not exist. On the flip side, if I somehow gashed my leg on something and was bleed profusely; you tearing up the only shirt to bind my wound, could neither be considered a good thing to do morally, because moral laws do not exist.

I think most of us get the picture now. Moral laws must exist or we would be unable to differentiate between good versus evil and right versus wrong. So we must possess a moral law that allows us to differentiate between good and evil. So statement #2 must be true. Now if both statement #1 and #2 are true, then in order for God not to exist, then Atheists best plan for a rebuttal would be on statement #3. I do admit that statement #3 " If a Moral Law exists, then a moral law giver (God) must exist" is the least obvious of the three statements to accept as true.

If there is a moral law in place that allows us to differentiate between good and evil, where did this law come from? In generally, laws come from something or someone. Did it "naturally" develop? Did a moral law come into existence during the Big Bang? Did moral laws precede humans? Or did it "developed" after humans came along? This is a very deep question and I hope to one day return to it; But if you attempt to answer the question on where moral laws came from and fail to invoke an absolute and unchanging being in your explanation, your theory will eventually lead you to conclude that there is no evil.

I know it seems counter-intuitive, but evil (the dark side) actually serves as evidence of God's existence. Next time, let's look at some really unwholesome and unsavory characters and see what we can learn about God from them.
