God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
The Afterlife (part 2 of 2)
By Lu Su

Is there an afterlife? No matter what you believe, I think the answer that Jesus gave to the question, "Is there an afterlife?" is worth examining. One of Jesus' best friends who walked, talked, and followed Jesus during his earthly ministry later became a apostle of the early church and wrote these words:

"He was with God from the beginning" -John 1:2.

When John is talking about the beginning, he's talking about the beginning beginning -a time before heaven and earth were created. Before the foundations of the earth were set. And WAY before the phrase, "Chachi loves Joni" was conceived (I like throwing in these archaic phrases from time to time so I can picture the these bewildered looks on these youthful faces). So if John's statement is True, the one person who would have first hand knowledge on whether or not there is an afterlife was Jesus. This question was asked to Jesus and was recorded by three gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

So let me try to give you the setting. It was the last week of Jesus' earthly ministry; Christians today call this the passion week. He and his disciples had entered Jerusalem. Jesus, upon entering the temple courts gets angry and cleanses the temple by kicking out the money changers and the vendors selling their wares. Later he is teaching in the temple courts in Jerusalem and priests and the teachers of the law start confronting Jesus by asking him a series of questions like, "By whose authority do you do these things?, Is it right to pay taxes?", and one of the questions was about the afterlife.

A group of Jews that belong to a religious sect called the Sadducees approached Jesus with a question concerning the afterlife. Biblical scholars seem to be in agreement that this question was asked on a Tuesday. This is kind of coincidentally, because I'm writing this article on a Tuesday -just three days before his crucifixion and six days before his resurrection. Incidentally for the Christian, the day Jesus was resurrected from the dead is commonly called Easter.

What made the question from the Sadducees a bit bizarre was that this group of Jews did not believe in angels, prophetic Scripture, or even in an afterlife -so to the body being resurrected after death was not something they believed in. Consequently, when you have a belief system like that, it basically tells you that this world is all you got. From what we can tell from history, this group became very materialistic and sought power. During the time Jesus was on earth, all the high priests came out of this sect.

That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. Finally, the woman died. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?" -Matthew 22: 23-28

So the question is actually a two part question. 1) Is there an afterlife? and 2) What will marriage look like in the afterlife? Had Jesus sought political power, he would have avoided this question that was designed to make the answer look foolish. Jesus could have remarked that the seventh brother should have either ran away or employed the services of a detective. Even detective Jacques Crusoe, should be able to spot something is awry when there are six deaths and all six are related to each other and all of them had the same wife.

Jesus does not turn the question into a joke; he directly answers the question on marriage and the afterlife. Jesus' answer is brilliant. Let me explain why. Jesus could have quoted from Samuel. Samuel was one of the greatest judges that ever lived. Before Israel had kings, God appointed Judges to make rulings, judgments, and to convey what God wants Israel to do. Apparently Samuel believed in an afterlife.

Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.

The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all the Israelites and set up camp at Gilboa. When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. Saul then said to his attendants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her."
"There is one in Endor," they said.

So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. "Consult a spirit for me," he said, "and bring up for me the one I name."

But the woman said to him, "Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?"

Saul swore to her by the LORD, "As surely as the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this."

Then the woman asked, "Whom shall I bring up for you?"
      "Bring up Samuel," he said.

When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!"

The king said to her, "Don't be afraid. What do you see?"
The woman said, "I see a spirit coming up out of the ground."

"What does he look like?" he asked.
"An old man wearing a robe is coming up," she said.
Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.

Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?"
"I am in great distress," Saul said. "The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do."

Samuel said, "Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy? The LORD has done what he predicted through me. The LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors to David. Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the LORD has done this to you today. The LORD will hand over both Israel and you to the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also hand over the army of Israel to the Philistines." -1 Samuel 28: 3-19

The catch phrase, "...tomorrow you and your sons will be with me". For Samuel to say, "me" that means he exists. Notice that Samuel is still conscious, cognizant, and can speak. Apparently in the afterlife, Samuel gets to retains his memories. I think it's fairly safe to believe that one of the greatest judges that ruled in Israel believes in the afterlife. But Jesus does NOT quote from the book called Samuel.

Jesus could have quoted from one of the greatest kings of Israel -king David. Unfortunately, even great kings can get themselves involved in great evil. What happened was that David already had a few wives. He had at least two before he became king. And when he became king, he inherited wives from his predecessor. But he wasn't satisfied with what he had. David coveted his neighbor's wife. He the had an affair with her, got her pregnant, and tried hard to cover up the affair. When David realized that he would not be successful in covering up the affair and pregnancy, he arranged for the death of his mistress' husband. God sends the prophet Nathan to shake David down.

The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, "There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.

"Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him."

David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity."

Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master's house to you, and your master's wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.'

Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD."
Nathan replied, "The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt, the son born to you will die."

After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne to David, and he became ill. David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and went into his house and spent the nights lying on the ground. The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused, and he would not eat any food with them.

On the seventh day the child died. David's servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, "While the child was still living, we spoke to David but he would not listen to us. How can we tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate."

David noticed that his servants were whispering among themselves and he realized the child was dead. "Is the child dead?" he asked.
"Yes," they replied, "he is dead."

Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.

His servants asked him, "Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!"

He answered, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, 'Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child live.' But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me." -2 Samuel 12: 1-10, 13-22

King David believed in an afterlife. The catch phrase being, "I will go to him..." Realizing going "to him" would be very difficult to do if you were an Atheist or if he got reincarnated into something else. But Jesus does NOT quote from a one of the Israel's greatest judges or kings (also known as the the giant slayer and a man after God's own heart).

Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." -Matthew 22: 29-32

Realize that Jesus is saying that if you either knew the power of God or the Scriptures, you would know the answer to this question. Just understanding one of them would had suffice. Jesus' answer is brilliant; and let me explain why. Samuel and David were men who certainly played huge roles for Israel. But Jesus does not use a quotation from one of Israel's greatest judge or king. He pulls a quote from a conversation between God and one of the greatest prophets that ever lived. Without Moses, there would be no role for Samuel and David to play. Without Moses, there would be no Torah.

The Sadducees did believed that only the books of Moses (The Torah) were True and were authoritative. All those other books (scrolls back then) that recorded historical events of past kings, judges, and prophets were like extra circular studies. Those books may have been interesting and noteworthy, but to the Sadducees they were not authoritative like the Torah. The quote Jesus uses is from Exodus, which is the second book of Moses.

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this strange sight why the bush does not burn up."

When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!"
And Moses said, "Here I am."

"Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." Then he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. -Exodus 3:1-6

The reason why Jesus' answer was brilliant was that he quoted from a portion of Scripture that the Sadducees accept as True. Notice that God did not say, "I was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob"." But said, "I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." I think for extra insurance and incase you wanted to pull a Bill Clinton stunt and start redefining terms like what "is is", or what "am" means, Jesus cuts that option off by specifically saying, "He is not the God of the dead but of the living."

So all your favorite Biblical characters: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, and David are all alive and well today. Apparently they continue to possess their own identity and have not been absorbed into this homogenized Godhead concept. If you read the Gospels, you will see that Moses makes an appearance to some of the disciples of Jesus.

According to the Scriptures, they have not been reincarnated into another person or object either. God is the God of the living, therefore there must be an afterlife.
