The Flight of Inner Morals to Outside Influences (part 2 of 3)
By Lu Su
A few weeks ago, I made a statement that it is morally wrong to kill defenseless women and children. Where you able to come up with an exception to the rule that could suddenly make the above event a morally correct thing to do? Can some ends justify the means here? Is there a goal that is so vital for us to obtain that the slaughter of innocent women and children can be deemed acceptable?
I cannot think of any. It will always be morally wrong to murder defenseless women and children. This statement is more than a personal preference or a feeling. Like two plus two equals four, I'm making a statement that is absolutely true. Truth is NOT subject to your or my personal preferences. Truth (or what is morally right) should not be subject to outside influences (i.e. political, social, economics, public opinions). 2+2=4 will still be true whether we get a new President or not. Murdering defenseless women and children will always be morally wrong, whether our country is in political upheaval or not.
I find it very interesting that when it comes to math people have no qualms about certain statements or equations being absolutely true. But when it comes to one's inner morals, suddenly absolutes are out the window. Many believe that when it comes to morals, everything is relative or just preference. The next time someone tells you they think there are no absolutes, ask them if they are absolutely sure about that.
There must be some type of absolute (some type of anchor) that allows man to differentiate between right and wrong. Without some type of fixed anchor, what is morally right or wrong can change. That can be very dangerous. If what is morally right and wrong is purely subjective, then we're bound to see a repeat of the above event.
Slavery was almost universally accepted in earlier centuries. Leg warmers (these big long socks that some women would wear over their jeans) were also well accepted at one time too. But don't both (slavery and leg warmers) seem very wrong now? Is what is right and wrong subject to change in time? For the Judeo Christian world view, what is morally right and wrong does NOT change, because what is right and wrong is ultimately anchored in an unchanging God.
"He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind." -1 Samuel 15:29
"I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed." -Malachi 3:6
"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." -James 1:17
Fortunately for us, God is not fickle. He neither changes the gravitational constants in our universe nor does he change what is morally right and wrong for the fun of it. If the male shown pictured above who is shooting survivors was put on trial, his defense attorney could come up with all different types of arguments (e.g. ordered to do so, legal at the time, he was young, pursuit of "happiness", some ethnic superiority pursuit), but none would alter the fact that he did something very evil -something morally wrong.
But what about the man towards the right who is just standing there? Let's say he was brought to trial; let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he neither fired his weapon nor mistreated any of these women and children. Let's also assume that he did not break any laws of the land while performing his guard duties. Let's say that his only participation involved him standing guard while the slaughter took place. Has this man done something morally wrong?
Most juries would say, "yes" - guilty by association and participation. Guilty because he was aware that great evil was being done and failure to respond with aid. So then there seems to be two parts to this in order to find a person guilty of a moral wrong. The first part is the ability to distinguish between right and wrong; the second part is the failure to respond by aiding those in great distress.
I found this kind of interesting. I was recently rereading 1 Kings Chapter 3. Solomon, King David's son, had just ascended his father's throne and God appears to Solomon in a dream. God said to Solomon, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." I knew that Solomon didn't ask for the heads of his enemies, for wealth or long life. For all these years, I just remembered the answer incorrectly. For decades now, I always thought that Solomon asked God for wisdom. But after reading the passages carefully, I realized that Solomon did NOT ask for wisdom. God grants Solomon his wish and in addition to his wish, God gives him wisdom, peace in the land, wealth and a long life. So what did Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived, ask for? Read and learn.
Solomon answered, "You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
"Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?" -1 Kings 3: 6-9
How many of us Americans, if given one wish would wish for something like that? What American would wish for a discerning heart in order to distinguish between right and wrong? Poll ten people and see if anyone comes up with that reply. Somehow, I just don't think Solomon's answer would make anyone's top ten list (including David Letterman's). So Solomon gets one wish from God and he doesn't wish for the winning numbers for the Egyptian Mega Millions Jackpot plus the power sphinx (it wasn't called "power ball" back then). But out of all the "stuff" out there you could ask for, Solomon asks God for morals (the ability to distinguish right from wrong); the King James version says, "that I may discern between good and bad."
Wisdom is far more than just being able to distinguish between right and wrong. The right answer given at the wrong time can be very disasterous. Providing the right answer when you should be quiet can also lead to disaster and heartache (like when your wife asks you if she looks fat in these jeans).
So morals is NOT something we are just natually endowed with. At the same time it seems to be something really important and desireable that our Maker wants us to have. I've given you two very easy scenarios regarding morals. Third grade boys mistreating little Teresa is definitely wrong. Murdering defense women and children is also wrong. I think you'd be hard press to find someone who didn't agree.
But within the last ten years, something has happened to us in America. What was morally wrong ten years ago no longer seems to be morally wrong any more. Outside influence have stormed in and caused our inner morals to tuck tail and run. I use that metaphor because my dog does that when he knows he has done somthing wrong. Furthermore, many of us have entered the shoes of the man just standing there watching. Next week, I'll show you what I mean.
