God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
God's Radical Ways in Preserving Man (conclusion)
By Lu Su

Upon the death of Jesus Christ, the Bible teaches us that three very out of the ordinary events occurred.

With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” -Mark 15: 37- 39

One unique event that had occurred was that the curtain of the temple was torn. In my house with three boys and a dog playing who all love football (or I think its called smoosh the guy or the animal with the ball), a torn curtain might bring a brief moment of silence; but it wouldn't be considered out of the ordinary in my house.

However, the Bible is talking about a particular curtain separated the Most Holy Place (also called the Holy of Holies) from the Holy Place. God's spirit dwelt on the Mercy Seat, which was basically the cover to the Ark of the Covenant (the center of attention for two indian Jones movies). Only about once a year, a man (whose name is not Harrison Ford) got to enter the Most Holy Place.

Once inside this square shaped chamber, the high priest would perform a ritual of sprinkling blood from a sacrificed animal onto the cover of the Ark of the Covenant. This ritual would temporarily atone for the sins of the people. Before the priest entered the chamber, there was a much to do cleansing type of ceremony (advance readers would want to brush up on Exodus 28 & 29 and Leviticus 16).

Entering the Holy of Holies, which was equivalent to entering God's prescience. This proved to be a hazardous occupation for priest who didn't feel the need to follow God's ordinances very carefully. Bells were actually sewn onto the priest's garment and they would tie a rope around him -just in case the priest didn't make it out of the chamber. This would then give them a means of retrieving him, without the need to physically enter the chamber (I think it's your turn to go inside and get him).

Now the chamber wasn't that large and contained no windows (God didn't demand the large corner window office). The chamber itself was a cube. It measured 20 cubits high by 20 cubits wide by 20 cubits deep. That's roughly 30' x 30' x 30' (or for you football fans the Most Holy Place was about 10 yards x 10 yards x 10 yards). Why did God want a perfectly square room? My small brain is unable to fully grasp what is going on here; but I do see the convergence of many symbols God gave man in order to point us towards Him. Now all of them converge right here at a specific time and specific location -in the Holy of Holies chamber inside the temple.

Holy Place

From Leviticus 16 we know that the high priest had to sacrifice a young male animal with no physical defects and sprinkle its blood seven times onto the Ark of the Covenant. So it was no coincidence that John the Baptist, upon seeing Jesus, says, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! " (John 1:29). Like a passover lamb or bull, Jesus was killed during the Jewish celebratory feast called Passover. What I think it is also interesting is that front face of Noah's Ark (which preserved man from the need to tread water for a very long time), the front face of the Ark of the Covenant (which was used to temporarily atoned for the sins of the people), and the front face of the alter (which animals were sacrificed on) exhibit the Golden Ratio. For those of you who know about this ratio, it's created by a series of numbers called the Fibonacci series. As shown in one of my past articles, this series of numbers resonates inside and outside our universe.

If you take the Fibonacci series but instead of using symbolic numerals to express the series, but used 2-Dimensional space to represent the series, you would get a series of squares that could spiral out from the center in a balanced way. But we live in a 3-Dimensional world. Since 3D TVs are the hot thing in the early 21st century, it would be more accurate to view the Fibonacci series as a series of cubes instead of squares. If you can make this leap (i.e. the series show intelligence and order, and can be pictured in 3D), you won't think it strange or coincidental that God would pick this shape for His chamber called the Most Holy Place. If you are a theist, you have a basic understanding that God is center of origin for all life. To me it makes sense that when you look at sunflowers, sea shells, or even a galaxy that its life spirals out of the its origin. Thus when I contemplate the author of all life, I find it all the more appropriate that God would start His book with the words, "In the beginning God" -Genesis 1:1.

One of the most famous old time prophets called Ezekiel (in Ezekiel 47) is given a vision of water flowing out from the center chamber of the Temple, which then goes to water and bring healing to the new Earth. Whether you interpret this vision literally or figuratively, most people would agree that water is essential to all life; we need water in order to exist, live and thrive. Once you understand this, you don't see it as a strange coincidence that when the triune God remakes Earth for the third time.

The first was in Genesis 1. The second was after the flood. And the third is to come. Catch that preview of the movie 2012 with John Cusack? It definitely won't be like that because God used water last time, but the Bible says he'll use fire the next time. But the real good news is that (according to the Bible), Heaven and Earth will become one. The apostle John is given a vision of a huge city called "New Jerusalem" (where God and believers in Jesus Christ will dwell) coming out of heaven to physically touch Earth. Coincidentally, the shape of God's city happens to have the dimensions of a cube. It's so large that it can easily accommodate multiple olympic size swimming pools, ski resorts, beaches, and 18 hole golf courses. The dimensions and details of God's city to come is provided in the last book of the Bible Revelations 21 verse 16. But like all nice places, reserve your room now, before the no more vacancy sign gets lit.

My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?" -John 14:2

But more on this another time, let me get back to the subject on hand. To understand how out of the ordinary the tearing of temple curtain was, you need to better understand the size of the curtain and customs back then. First of all, it was not possible for a human (even with big scissors) to tear the curtain in two. The curtain before the Holy of Holies was “40 cubits (60 feet) high, and 20 (30 feet) wide, and was the thickness of the palm of a hand. It was stitched together like a quilt and was made up of 72 squares. So because of the way it was constructed, as described in the Talmud, neither mischievous persons nor a mere earthquake could tear this baby in half. Tearing of the curtain had big time social significance too.

Back then (and even today in some cultures) the tearing of clothes is an outward sign of grief and distress over some disaster or calamity. Sometimes it indicated a spiritual indignation against sin and what is contrary to God’s Word. Tearing your clothes (rending your garment) was also a sign of deep sorrow and mourning over someone who has died. So it's perfectly understandable and fitting that God would tear the curtain that clothed the Most Holy Place, upon the death of His only Son. But more than that, the tearing of the curtain also had a spiritual and moral significance too.

I spent an entire essay writing about this. There was a very good reason why God tore the current down instead of across. So for those who forgot or want to learn more about the spiritual and moral significance of the tearing of the curtain, check out my essay called, "Setting the Bar".

Upon reading Mark's Gospel, you would not understand at all why the Roman centurion would make such a conclusion (i.e. that this man was the son of God). Crucifixion of criminals was a common practice back then. It was very effective in deterring crime. Unlike our society in the 21st century, there were no repeat offenders back in the 1st century. Crucifixion had a 100% success rate in discouraging repeat offenders. It also makes perfect sense that a centurion was on the scene where Jesus was being hung on a cross, because He was a hot political and religious figure who claimed to be a king.

A centurion was basically in charge of 100 soldiers. Centurions often suffered heavy casualties in battle, because the fought alongside the men they commanded in hand to hand combat. Furthermore they usually took the lead position and typically positioned themselves at the front of the century formation. They led and inspired their men by example. They also sought to display the skill and courage that may have brought them to their rank in the first place. Because of this, they often suffered a disproportionate number of casualties (unlike Generals who tend to command from the rear).

So this experienced and battle tested soldier witnesses Jesus' death and concludes, "Surely this man was the Son of God!"? There isn't enough information in the Gospel of Mark for us to understand why the centurion would make such a comment. At Jesus' death, the centurion would not have been aware of the curtain in the temple being torn in two from top to bottom. Even if he was aware of this unique event, I don't think that would have made a difference. Fortunately for us, other Gospel writers shed more light on the subject.

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” -Luke 23: 44 -47

Okay, we get more information on this account. The centurion would have definitely noticed the sun stopped shining and hear Jesus' final words, but here again I personally don't think either of those two events would cause the centurion to conclude, "Surely this man was the Son of God! (righteous man)". But the apostle Matthew, gives us details that would surely lift the hairs off most people's necks.

And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” -Matthew 27: 50-54

An earthquake would be scary experience, but rocks splitting and tombs breaking open as "bodes of many holy people who had died were raised to life." That would be an attention getter! And in my opinion best explains why the centurion concluded Jesus was the son of God. Only God can bring a dead man to life again right?

The sacrifice of God's only son was THE most radical way in preserving man. It happens to be the ONLY way too. If there were other ways, then a loving God would not have chosen this route -unless he had absolutely no other choice. God paid the highest price in order to preserve us. He paid the ransom fee to save some of us from the wages of sin (death). Now, eternal life is available for the low price of just accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior. Book your eternal time share now, before it is too late.

Lastly, with the death of His Son, God changes the location of worship. In the past, God's people had to go to the temple in Jerusalem to engage in worship -for that's where God's spirit had resided for a time.God does something totally radical here and transfers the location of the temple from a physical structure made of stone to a totally new location.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. -Ezekiel 36:26

He moves the temple inside the physical bodies of believers of His Son Jesus Christ. Now those who have accepted Christ, take this mobile temple to wherever they go. Jesus makes it clear that the new temple is the body.

The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. -John 2: 18-22

Are you finding it too difficult to go find and worship God? Maybe with all of these mobile temples wandering about, maybe God will find a radical way and use one to preserve you.
