God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
God's Radical Ways in Preserving Man (part 4)
By Lu Su

See if you can see spot a common pattern in these three separate events:

BASRA, IRAQ Jan 14, 2012: A suicide bomber killed 53 people in an apparent sectarian attack in southern Iraq on Saturday casting a pall over the climax of a pilgrimage that draws hundreds of thousands from around the world. The attack on devotees on the outskirts of the port city of Basra, which left 137 wounded, came with Iraq mired in a political row that has stoked sectarian tensions less than a month after US forces completed their pullout. The violence was the latest in a spate of attacks against pilgrims in the two weeks leading to the conclusion of Arbaeen, which marks 40 days after the Ashura anniversary. The bombing killed 53 people and wounded 137, according to Riyadh Abdulamir, head of Basra province’s health department. He said women and children were among the casualties, but did not give further details. Pilgrims in southern Iraq who cannot visit the central shrine city of Karbala to mark Arbaeen typically make the shorter trip to Khutwa Imam Ali, which lies around seven miles west of Basra. Hundreds of thousands did make it to Karbala on Saturday amid massive security in face of the insurgent threat. Officials said 15 million pilgrims have passed through the city in the past two weeks leading up to the end of the commemorations, including some 500,000 from outside Iraq.

CLERMONT, FRANCE 1095: The First Crusade was an attempt to re-capture Jerusalem. After the capture of Jerusalem by the Muslims in 1076, any Christian who wanted to pay a pilgrimage to the city faced a very hard time. Muslim soldiers made life very difficult for the Christians and trying to get to Jerusalem was filled with danger for a Christian. This greatly angered all Christians. One Christian - called Alexius I of Constantinople - feared that his country might also fall to the Muslims as it was very close to the territory captured by the Muslims. Constantinople is in modern day Turkey. Alexius called on the pope - Urban II - to give him help. In 1095, Urban spoke to a great crown at Clermont in France. He called for a war against the Muslims so that Jerusalem was regained for the Christian faith. In his speech he said:

"Christians, hasten to help your brothers in the East, for they are being attacked. Arm for the rescue of Jerusalem under your captain Christ. Wear his cross as your badge. If you are killed your sins will be pardoned."

Those who volunteered to go to fight the Muslims cut out red crosses and sewed them on their tunics. The French word "croix" means cross and the word changed to "croisades" or crusades. The fight against the Muslims became a Holy War.

JERUSALEM, around 30 - 36 AD: On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’” The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. -Mark 11:15-18

Were you able to spot a common denominator between all three events? This is the answer I was looking for is when worship needs to be performed at a particular location, evil men will often take advantage of this event and venue to further their own personal ambitions. In other words: When worship needs to be done at a particular location, evil men will often rise up to take advantage of the situation.

To blow yourself up in order to murder unarmed men, women, and children whose sole desire is worship in a way that pays homage (to honor) to a former holy man? The person committing suicide has lost all sense of right and wrong. Pope Urban's call to arms is a classic example of men using religion in order to further their own political/personal interest. The Bible today is the same Bible Pope Urban had in 1095. I am unable to located any text that says sins can be pardoned if you go engage in war. "Sins being pardoned" has the connotation that you will get a free ticket to heaven, if killed in this Holy War. Sounds like a similar incentive given today to young suicide bombers, but without the allure of virgins.

Lastly, Jesus' action in driving out the vendors conducting business inside the temple was the last straw for the religious establishment at that time. After this event, the chief priests' get the ball rolling that would lead to Jesus' crucifixion later that same week. Young men and women learn this: When it comes to men who love money or power more than God, they'll usually put up with your protests against their philosophy or view points; but expect a volatile reaction when your actions start impacting their wallets. I think a little background is needed here so you can better understand Jesus' actions and comments.

Once a year, people who desired to worship the one true God would come to Jerusalem annually to celebrate the Passover Feast. The reason why worshipers came from all different countries and would travel several hundred miles to Jerusalem was because the Temple was located in this city. Several generations back, when God gave the designs for His Temple to be built, it was meant to be a house of prayer for all people (i.e. any nation, any skin color, any race); The one thing these worshipers shared in common was the desire to worship the one and only true God.

Passover was the celebration of last miraculous sign God performed in Egypt, before pulling his people out of slavery. Passover is about "passing over" households that had taken an unblemished male lamb, sacrificed it, and smeared its blood on the door posts. I admit, it's a strange custom (and my neighbors and PETA members absolutely hate it when I practice this tradition and go to their house and bloody their door posts too). During Moses' time, the last plague claimed the life of every first born male (human or animal) in the household that did NOT perform this ritual.

But because the Jews had very different customs and rituals than the non-Jews (Gentile), some men (probably Jewish priests) had separate courtyard built inside the temple; One courtyard for Gentiles (non-Jews) and one for Jews. God never intended such Apartheid like separation when it came to worship. Separate court yards were not in the original specs for first temple; separate court yards are not specified in the prophet Ezekiel's vision of the Millennium temple (the temple to come in the future).

lu

Bird's eye-view of what Herod's temple probably looked like.

lu

The Temple built by Herod the Great was surrounded by the Court of the Gentiles. Note the vast stone platform on which the Temple precinct stood.

Wailing Wall in Jerusalem

The Wailing Wall, which is what is left of the Temple. This wall most likely served as a platform on which the Temple stood on top of.

What was part of the passover tradition was to bring an animal (a pari of doves if you were poor) to the priest to be sacrificed. Because people traveled far distances to come to Jerusalem, it was difficult enough to just get yourself and your family there. But to also transport, feed, and keep from escaping an animal was a royal pain. So the easier thing to do is to was to purchase one once you got to Jerusalem (plus you don't have to explain to your kids what happen to thier pet lamby).

At first vendors sold their animals outside Jerusalem's walls, but that practiced appeared to have ceased after the Temple grounds were enlarged and the vendors were pulled inside the Temple's walls. It's my speculation that the Chief Priests weren't making money when the vendors were outside the city walls (they had no control). "Let's sell them booth space", was probably how the Chief Priests got in on the action. Also if you noticed the money changers were also doing business on the Temple courts too. The reason why they were there in the first place was because of the Chief Priests' policies to only receive monetary donations and offerings in the Temple's own currency (Roman currency was considered sacrilege). And of course, whenever you change money from one currency to another, it's going to cost you.

So then Jesus walks into the temple and finds himself immediately in the Court of the Gentiles (Gentiles are any persons that are not Jewish). This is the only place where non-Jews were allowed to worship. So in the only location where a non-Jew could come to worship is filled with animals and vendors attempting to do commerce. Jesus got real upset and angry. I just love it that we have a God that finds this an outraged, gets angry, and takes action to have them removed.

When worship needs to be done in a particular location, it seems to serve as a magnet for evil men. Next time let's look at God's radical way in preserving man and where he relocates the Temple (the place of worship).
