The Messenger's Messenger's Message
By Lu Su
About a week ago, our life's odometer recently tripped from 2010 to 2011. So Happy New Year!
Like the car list above, there isn't anything new. This is actually a repeat message. But there is a need to replenish the inventory and the soul. I am passing on to you a message that was given to a remnant of God's people about 2500 years ago. However, it's still relevant to God's people today. It's an oldie but a goody. This message is for God's people who were born in the latter part of the 20th century and whose lives here on Earth ended in the 21st century. I realize that in the distant future, there is a possibility that these numbers may mean very little.
About 70 years ago, a person named Benito Mussolini rose to power. He claimed that his ascension to power would reset the historical timeline with his new philosophy and bring in a new era. Fortunately for most of us, this never happened, and we still use the Christ B.C. and A.D. standard. But in case the timeline does get reset, allow me to provide some other points of references, so future generations can figure out when you heard this message.
The largest planet in our solar system is called Jupiter. Three (3) months ago its orbit around the Sun brought the planet to its closest approach to Earth since forty-seven (47 ) years ago. The next time Jupiter makes such a close approach will be twenty-two (22) years from now. Three (3) weeks ago there was a total lunar eclipse that was visible throughout most of eastern Asia, Australia, the Pacific Oceans, the Americas and Europe. This particular lunar eclipse corresponded at the same time with the Winter Solstice (for those of us living in the Northern hemisphere) and a Summer Solstice (for those living in the Southern hemisphere). The last time both occurred at the same time was nearly 4 centuries ago (December 21, 1638).
In the nation that I live in, the king's name is Barack Obama and is given the title of President of the United States. At the time of this message, the United States of America was the most influential and the most powerful nation (military wise) in the world. In two weeks, the President will start his third year of his reign.
In the territory I live in, the governor's name is Christopher Christie and he will start his second year of his reign. The territory that I live in is currently called the State of New Jersey. Across from this state is an island, which belongs to the State of New York. A large river, one that I would be unable to swim across, separates the two states. The name of this island is called Manhattan. Its nickname is the Big Apple.
Near the southern tip of Manhattan is a small area called the Financial District, which can be traversed by foot within a few minutes. Nine months from now, it will mark the 10th anniversary where two very large towers unexpectedly fell and thousands of people perished. This district is also known as the financial capital of the world. During my life time this district brought financial security and economic prosperity to this nation and many other nations throughout the world.
This message comes at a time BEFORE this central world financial hub, responsible for banking, lending, and underwriting suffered a total financial collapsed. We are so interconnected these days; Although it has not happened yet, I believe a collapse here at this hub will trigger a collapse in other financial hubs throughout the world. At the time of this message, we the American people have witnessed cracks in this financial institution's foundations (and the structure has started to lean). Cracks in other world financial systems have also appeared.
The remedy being applied in order to stop/slow the cracks from getting larger has been to borrow vast sums of money from the American people -in amounts never borrowed before. Interesting, the problems first arose because of excessive borrowing and lending; now the remedy being applied is to borrow more. I do not disagree that this may be the best short term solution given the circumstances; however the success and longevity of this initiative is now a confidence issue with the American people to meet the past, present and future debt obligations.
As a simple man that tries to hock toys for a living, it seems to me that our ability to pay our nation's debt obligation depends on the financial health of the individual states that comprise the United States of America. I do understand that when a family, clan or a state is strong, it can weather very bad storms of all kinds. However, when I look at the health of key contributing states (i.e. California, Connecticut, New York, Illinois, and New Jersey), I have grown concerned.
I know this message is not going to be received well, because it addresses something that is very dear to almost all people (money). So don't get angry at the messenger. I am simply passing on a message that the prophet Malachi gave God's people about 400 years before the first Christmas. To put it in historical context, a remnant of God's chosen people have returned from exile from Babylon. The Persian empire is now in control and soon the financial capital of the world will shift to Greece and then Rome. The Temple in Jerusalem has been rebuilt.
Although Malachi sounds like an Italian, his name in Hebrew means "messenger". For those of you not familiar with Malachi, it is the last book of the old testament in the Bible. Malachi is a prophet and provides a message. I want to remind you that this message is NOT for all people, but just to God's people. So please pay attention if you are in the later group. Malachi's message in chapter 3 can be summarized as:
1) Return to God.
2) And a good way to start is to stop stealing from God.
We are God's people. We don't steal right? And we certainly don't steal from God right?
The Message:
“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty.
Today the above prophecy would be difficult to fulfill, since the temple is no longer standing. But about 2000 years ago, about 400 years after Malachi's message, Jesus fulfills the prophecy by walking into the temple in Jerusalem. Also remember Jesus was a trouble maker. He said many brazen and politically incorrect thing. As a child, after he had been separated from his earthly parents for days and Mary and Joseph had been frantically searching for him; They finally find him in the temple. And remember his reply?
“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” -Luke 2:49
Then again when he is older when he overturns the merchant's tables who set up shop in the temple's courtyards.
To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” -John 2:16
But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.
These words of prophecy were NOT fulfilled in Jesus Christ's first coming. From the text above, I am under the impression that upon his second coming, he is not going to be quite as gentle.
“So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the LORD Almighty.
The above is a warning to us (and not to just Harry Potter).
“I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD Almighty.
The above is what God desires. What an awesome offer.
“But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’
“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.
There seems to be a shift in the conversation, as if God is going off on a tangent. One moment we were talking about returning to God. Then suddenly God is calling us robbers. Something apparently is getting in the way of our return.
“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’
“In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the LORD Almighty.
Don't bother to file for an extension or an exemption, because you don't grow crops. Next week let me show you how we fine citizens of the God most high (aka God's people) steal from God.
