When Good Men Do Nothing (part 1 of 2)
By Lu Su
A few weeks ago, I left off with the thought "All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." I want to look at two specific examples of what happens when good men do nothing. These two events continue to devastate societies throughout the world morally, socially, and economically. One event is happening today -every day.
So what bad thing can happen when good men do nothing. WeLL..... (doing my Ronald Reagan impersonation) what is this horrific event? Where are men doing nothing?
To answer this question, let's look at where men that have done evil are gathered. Realize that for you to determine if something is evil or good, you need a moral code. The laws of any nation are moral codes that either reflect society's or the dictator's morals. So people who break laws in our country are essentially people who go against what we deemed as morally correct. So let's look at our jails and prisons.
A report released in 2008 indicates that in the United States more than 1 in 100 adults is now confined in an American jail or prison.[1] The United States has 5% of the world's population and yet we have 25% of the world's incarcerated population.[2] We have the highest incarceration rate in the world. What's going on here? Don't Americans live in a free country? Isn't freedom one of our highest ideals? Why do we have so many incarcerated people? You would think if all Americans adopted New Hampshire's license plate theme "Live Free or Die", there would be no prison over crowding problems.
The majority of the people serving time in our prisons have something in common. The majority of the convicts in our prison system have had no father figure in their life. A fatherless home is the biggest contributing factor for the the moral decline in our country that leads to crime, divorce, dependency on government. A fatherless home is the root cause of so many ills that we have in America. "While 80% of the “post-war generation” spent their entire childhood with both parents in the home, only 50% will do so today.
"Marriages don't last. When I meet a guy, the first question I ask myself is: is this the man I want my children to spend their weekends with?" -Rita Rudner.
Today, about 24 million children live in homes where their natural father does not live. The results of the fatherless home are staggering: 63% of youth suicides, 85% of behavioral disorders, 71% of high school dropouts, 70% of youth prison inmates, and 85% or all prison inmates come from fatherless homes." [3]. That is a staggering figure! 85% of people who have been convicted of a grievous crime come from a home where there was no father. I spoke to a man that is very involved in helping families of prison inmates. He told me that so many men incarcerated have absolutely no memory of their father -never even met them.
Huge amounts of evil and distress would be removed from our society, if we could only stop good men from doing nothing and get them to play their God given role as a father.
Since the readership is mostly male, I want to address them. Men, you want to change the world? You want to impact the world? The immediate starting point is inside your own home -teaching your own flesh and blood right from wrong. I assure you that it will have a long lasting impact for generations to come. In my opinion it is far more effective than trying to shape laws that makes my 50+ year old neighbor attend CPA ethics classes.
If you have kids under your roof, realize that you are not a professional father. I don't care how many books you've read on the subject or how many parenting seminars you have attended. You and I certainly have room for improvement. Believe it or not, one of the easiest and fastest ways to improve your fatherhood skills is to focus your attention not on your kids, but onto your spouse. Sounds a little odd right? Let me explain.
Realize that all the "work" you invest in as being a father (i.e. spending time with them, going to their events, being there for them, teaching them how to do things) quickly degrades if you have a spouse is in the background speaking poorly about you to your kids. On the other hand if your spouse speaks well of you in front of the children, it can even make up for all the times we mess up. Now I realize for the men that have already fallen into the other 50% percentile where the family unit has already been severed with a divorce, your task is much more challenging. It's much more challenging because you probably have less access to your kid(s) and less opportunity to gain respect from your ex-wife.
Love your spouse because she's your spouse. I want to remind you that when you took your marriage oath, it didn't have pre-conditions that you love her only if she performs to certain level of expectation. Second of all, love your spouse in order to gain respect. Your relationship with your spouse directly impacts the quality of the relationship you can have with your kids. If your spouse makes comments like you are an idiot to the children, you'll lose respect and the ability to influence your kids in a positive way.
Realize that your spouse doesn't even have to say anything. Kids are like sponges and they can pick up body language or your spouse rolling her eyes or the exhale of breath in frustration when the topic of you comes up. James Dobson, the famous writer of many parenting books, makes a very astute comment in one of his books. He says something to the effect that the stay at home spouse serves as a "gate keeper"; they regulate the amount of influence the other spouse can have with their children.
So step one on improving the world for the better: Attend to your responsibilities that you have in your own home. Now if you want extra credit (and if you are not a convicted sex offender), consider influencing the world for better by volunteering for a position that can influence kids. Perhaps it's to simplily chaperon a single school event, teach a class, help out at a cub scout meeting, be an assistant coach, or simply become a PTA member. Many of you men have already stepped into these roles and I'm sure you've already seen how many kids are being brought up in dysfunctional homes. Maybe through your influence (i.e. a pat on the back, a atta boy) might just be enough to prevent another Columbine shooter.
Men doing nothing by not fathering a home is certainly devastating. Next week let's look at a even more devastating problem. One single man did nothing long ago and now all of us are paying for it now. Maybe some of us can learn from his mistake.
