God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Connecting the Dots via Omniscience (part 2 of 2)
By Lu Su

Let's see, It's been awhile. I was trying to figure out how to connect the words of the prophets to this concept of repentance. I believe if people could see the omniscience of God, the two dots might connect.

Daniel 2

Nebuchadnezzar's Dream

In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. When they came in and stood before the king, he said to them, "I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means. "

The magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers were the learned men of that time. Back then there wasn't a big differentiation between the arts and the sciences. If you were able to pull a rabbit out of the hat, many would consider you wise. Many back then honestly believed answers to their future could be obtained by studying the heavens (stars)."What an ancient and antiquated methodology of figuring out the future", I thought to myself. I was think about this, as I read my morning's horoscope and then realized that I missed yesterday's appointment with my psychic reader.

Unfortunately, I think many people's spiritual journey gets derailed right here; because it's far easier to worship something that was created than the Creator. So many men start worshiping something in creation (i.e. sun, moon, earth, fame, work), instead of the Creator. But it certainly isn't beneath the Creator to use something in creation to convey a message to you. Remember the wise men from the East bearing gifts in the baby Jesus narrative?. The stars told them that a great king was born in the land of Judah; so a handful of them saddled their camels and headed West in search of this great king. Many scholars believe the wise men came from Babylon which is located in modern day Iraq -where king Nebuchadnezzar established his capital for his kingdom around 600 BC.

Then the astrologers answered the king in Aramaic, "O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it."

Kind of interesting; The first few chapters of Daniel were written in Aramaic and the later part in Hebrew. Daniel was fluent in both languages and this book shows that Daniel can switch hit. "O king, live forever!" sounds like a corny thing to say; but back then, it was the proper way to address the king. It's like our game show Jeopardy; before speaking, you must first address the leader (Alex Trebek) with one of these words: who, what, where, why, or how. Failure to do so, results in a loss of your turn. Failure to use special catch words in 600BC, could result in a disturbed king.

The king replied to the astrologers, "This is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble. But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the dream and interpret it for me."

Notice that though he summoned a whole host of wise men (i.e. magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers),but the king specifically addresses the astrologers -and the king's threat is directed to them (the astrologers). So even way back then, magicians, enchanters, and sorcerers like Harry Potter weren't known for their ability to divine the future. And in many cultures today, dreams and visions are still often given great importance. The king is from an idol worshiping society, so the particular dream has special relevance to him. So he addresses the group of people that supposedly would be most skilled in interpreting the future. Now the complication is that the king wants his astrologers to (first) tell him what he had dreamt and then (second) interpret the dream. So you see the progression: a man of power becomes disturbed, a harsh rule follows, and innocent people are about to die.

I have a hunch on what stirred in Nebuchadnezzar's mind. All these learned men were under the king's employment. Moreover, since they were in his court, they were eating his food, drinking his wine, and they probably enjoying other membership privileges (use of the pool, golf course, favorable tee times, lawn service by a man name Eddie, and back massages from this woman named Cindy). At this point, I'm sure the king has probably experienced inaccurate predictions or interpretations by his astrologers, but despite their inaccuracy, he continues to see them jockey for power and position. The king is astute to know that most of these guys will want to say something that will make the king feel good. The king is scared. He's desperate. When you are desperate, you want truth; you don't need "yes" men to tell you how great you are. So I believe the king at this point has totally had it with all these "wise" men. Something very disturbing has occurred. The king believes it is of great importance, he is desperate to find the true meaning of this dream, and wants all the learned men on his payroll to earn their keep -immediately. He knows if he tells them the dream, anyone (including Eddie and Cindy) could blab out an interpretation.

Once more they replied, "Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it."

Then the king answered, "I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me the dream, there is just one penalty for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me."

The king's wise men sort of remind me of some of our financial and economic advisors we have today. They too want to hear the dream first (know how the market or particular company performed) before giving their interpretation on the meaning (why the market behaved the way it did). I always find it humorous when I hear an explanation on why the stock market went up or down -and especially when it can be explained in less than three seconds. "Yesterday stocks retreated because of profit taking" or "Dell beat earnings expectations, which lifted the tech sector" (you really need some omniscience in order to provide answers like that). So I think the king at this point is just absolutely frustrated with his his advisors. He's basically saying, if you are the experts in this, tell me what is going to happen first (the dream) before you give the reason (the interpretation).

The astrologers answered the king, "There is not a man on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer. What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among men."

The astrologers basically tell the king to his face that he is out of his mind. Notice how miserly loves company. Up until this point, the entire conversation has been between the king and the astrologers. But in the astrologers' last reply, he suddenly drags in all the other wise men into their problem. Had I been a magician standing next to the spokesperson for the astrologers, I think a sharp elbow jab into the speakers gut would have been appropriate at the particular moment. So when the main spokesperson for the astrologers was saying "No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any .." (huge elbow jab into the speaker's solar plexus right here) and then finish the sentence for him: "...any ASTROLOGER. What the king asks is too difficult for those ASTROLOGERS to accomplish".

This made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon. So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.

This is harsh.

When Arioch, the commander of the king's guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. He asked the king's officer, "Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?" Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.

Arioch's title is commander of the king's guard. His title in today's language would be head of the secret service. Note that Daniel isn't even a first string advisor at this time. He's probably considered to be an apprentice or an aide.

Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven

and said:
       "Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
       wisdom and power are his.

He changes times and seasons;
he sets up kings and deposes them.
He gives wisdom to the wise
       and knowledge to the discerning.

He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
       and light dwells with him.

I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king."

The above four verses are one of the few recorded prayers from Daniel. Notice the deep insight Daniel has about God (i.e. wisdom and power are from God, God controls time and the seasons, God determines what ruler gets put into power and when they are to be removed). Also, notice how humble Daniel is. God reveals the dream to Daniel realizes it is a group effort "you have made known to me what WE asked of you". This is the kind of man you want to work for; one who isn't overly "me" oriented. So beware of working or partnering with self absorbed people. After the team accomplishes something good or bad, self oriented people will suddenly suffer from bouts of amnesia -never in your favor. Notice how God oriented Daniel is. Daniel doesn't go to the king to plead for mercy. Daniel pleads for mercy from God.

Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him."

Fortunately for the wise men of Babylon, Daniel is not an insecure person. In general most men with insecurity issues, seek power, wealth, fame, or a combination in order to compensate for their fears. Had Daniel sought power or position, he could have easily waited until the executions began. Only when it was his or his friends turn to put their head on the chopping block, he could have then chirped up with the revelation. Usually executions start from the top down; and this simple strategy of waiting could have rid Daniel of much competition. But it is my hunch that many wise men knew Nebuchadnezzar well; he was not a person to show leniency or mercy and certainly not one to suddenly reverse a decree that he just made. So it was my hunch that many of these wise men immediately implemented exit strategy #1. This strategy was best spoken by the current governor of California when he starred in the hit movie Terminator. Those famous words were, "GED OUWD!" (make sure you say it with a thick Austrian accent).

Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, "I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can tell the king what his dream means."

This line shows you how low down the list of wise men Daniel was. The king does not even know Daniel by his name.

The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar), "Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?"

The cultural exchange program implemented onto the defeated exiles included a name change.

Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you lay on your bed are these:

"As you were lying there, O king, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen. 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than other living men, but so that you, O king, may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.

"You looked, O king, and there before you stood a large statue an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance.

This particular dream would have had great interest to the king. Idol worship was very commonplace in their culture.

The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay.

Notice the degradation in quality of metals (in terms of worth) -gold, silver, bronze, and iron. Now if you were to check the periodic table and find the first three metals in the periodic table, you would find that the first three metals (like in the statue) are stacked on top of each other -but in reverse order. There must be some logical reason in constructing the modern periodic table the way they did; but the identification of elements and later the construction of the periodic table was WAY before Daniel's time. I'm not making this up, check out the periodic table to see for yourself. Note that bronze is an alloy and is compose primarily of copper. So the skeptic says that it's just a coincidence that the first three metals happen to be stacked on top of each other in the periodic table.

Then you would also have to admit that it is a very strange coincidence that these same three metals each have a prime number of protons in its nucleus. When the book of Daniel was written, which was way before the 1st century, these people had absolutely no idea about the molecular make up of these metals -let alone what a proton was. The scriptures is very big on the use of prime numbers. I believe God left his signature all over the Scriptures by the repeating the occurrence of prime numbers throughout his book.

In the movie Contact starring Jodie Foster, there seem to be no argument for intelligence when these fictitious scientists received a stream of prime numbers in the form of electromagnetic energy from outer space. So a pattern of prime numbers coming from outer space would show extra-terrestrial intelligence? But a stream of prime number emanating from the Scriptures would not be counted as intelligence? The atomic number for copper is 29, silver 47, and gold 79. So it just so happens that the first three (3) metals mentioned in the dream have a a prime number of protons found its nucleus? If I recall, on this journey, we've already encountered the significance of prime numbers once before. I do not believe the Creator of this dream randomly chose these three (3) particular metals.

Now the forth metal, iron, is different from the other three metals. In the periodic table iron is apart from the other three metals (it's in a different column). You will soon see that Daniel spends more time interpreting the significance of iron than the first three metals combined. For very advanced readers, read Daniel 7:4-7; God gives Daniel a vision of four animals that correlate to Nebuchadnezzar's four metals; again the first three animals seem to be related to each other (i.e. you could find all three in a zoo), but the fourth animal (the one that correlates to iron) is apart (very different) from the other three.

For those of you who don't enjoy math, skip this next paragraph. The atomic number for iron is 26, which is not a prime number. I think this makes sense because smart chemists, when arranging the elements in the periodic table, didn't just assemble the elements randomly. Elements in the same column share certain properties. But somehow I got this feeling that iron (26) must somehow tie into these three prime numbers of copper (29), silver (47), and gold (79) -after all it's one of the metals in the statue. So I just started to do some simple addition and subtraction. Strange, when you add to 26 to each of the other metal's atomic numbers you get 55, 73 and 105; then when you add those three number up 55+73+105=133 (a prime number). When you subtract 26 from each of the numbers you get 3, 21 and 53; when you subtract 53-21-3=29 (another prime number). When you subtract 26 from 29 you get 3 (a prime number). When you add 26 to 47, you get 73 (a prime number). When you subtract 26 from 79, you get 53 (a prime number). Now add up these three numbers 3+73+53=129 (again, another prime number). Now subtract these very same three numbers 53-73-3=-17 (this is getting bizarre, another prime number). I haven't tried all the numbers yet, but I think 26 may be the only number that can through the above's simple addition and subtraction procedures consistently produce a series of prime numbers seven (7) times. Other than God leaving his customary signature seven here, I believe these series of prime numbers must have some greater significance; but eludes me at this time.

While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were broken to pieces at the same time and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.

This is one of the few prophecies in scripture that is actually interpreted on the spot. So in a way, understanding this prophecy is a gimmie; we do not have to debate on its interpretation. So here is the interpretation:

"This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king. You, O king, are the king of kings. The God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory; in your hands he has placed mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds of the air. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold.

"After you, another kingdom will rise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth. Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron for iron breaks and smashes everything and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others. Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.

"In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.

"The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and the interpretation is trustworthy."

The stone coming soon is Jesus Christ who will bring to an end all these earthly kingdoms ran so imperfectly by men (us). This will be Judgment Day (just think of the Terminator on his bike, but I assure you much scarier for many). For many Jews, this will be Christ's first appearance and to the Christians Christ's second appearance (2nd coming). As a quick aside, the stone back then had much greater significance than it has today. Stones were the basic building material of their times. Stone was used to build everything that was to last (i.e. foundations, walls, houses, roads, bridges, idols, and stoning people). But the stone had much more deeper meaning than a piece of building material or a weapon.

As it is written:
"See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
-Romans: 9:33

The Apostle Paul didn't make this up, he was quoting from the prophet Isaiah:

So this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
"See, I lay a stone in Zion,
       a tested stone,
       a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who trusts will never be dismayed.
-Isaiah 28:16

and he will be a sanctuary;
but for both houses of Israel he will be
a stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
       a trap and a snare.
- Isaiah 8:14

For those who are still skeptical that the stone is to represent the Christ, read Daniel 7:1-9

Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him. The king said to Daniel, "Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery."

Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men. Moreover, at Daniel's request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.

Good to see that Daniel didn't come down with a case of amnesia when he got his promotion.

Nebuchadnezzar's statue Head of Gold - Babylon (609-539 BC) 70 years.
"This was the dream; now we will tell its interpretation before the king. "You, O king, are the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, the strength and the glory; and wherever the sons of men dwell, or the beasts of the field, or the birds of the sky, He has given them into your hand and has caused you to rule over them all. You are the head of gold. (Daniel 2: 36-38)
Chest and Arms of Silver - Medo-Persia (539-331 BC) 208 years.
"After you there will arise another kingdom inferior to you, then another third kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth. (Daniel 2: 39)
Belly and Thighs of Bronze - Greece (331-168 BC) 163 years.
The Greeks under the leadership of Alexander the Great were the third conquerors.
Legs of Iron - Rome (168 BC - 476 AD) 644 years.
"Then there will be a fourth kingdom as strong as iron; just as iron crushes and shatters all things, so, like iron that breaks in pieces, it will crush and break all these in pieces." (Daniel 2: 40)
Feet of Iron and Clay - (476 to the end) 1533 years to now.
"In that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have in it the toughness of iron, just as you saw the iron mixed with common clay. As the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of pottery, so some of the kingdom will be strong and part of it will be brittle." (Daniel 2: 41-42)

In the dream, note that there were only four metals (four kingdoms/empires). The feet is not a new empire, but simply an extension of the fourth kingdom. Babylon was conquered by the Medo-Persian empire, who were then conquered by the Greeks, who were then conquered by Romans. Remember your history. No empire rose up after Roman empire and conquered Rome. The Roman empire temporarily collapsed on its own. All four metals (all four empires) have already made their appearance. There are NO MORE earthly kingdoms (empires) to come. Understand this. We are in the end stage now. Because the feet has iron it, the Roman empire needs to re-establish itself again; but the prophet is clear and says it (the feet) will never be as strong as it was before -hence the clay mixed into it.

If you look at a map of the former Roman Empire, it looks like this:

roman empire map

Geography and modern history has never been one of my great strengths, but it seems like the bulk of the countries that made up the Roman empire include modern day: Portugal, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, the Balkan countries, and Turkey.

Many people probably feel they still have plenty of time to repent, before the feet of iron and clay makes its appearance. After all, it will probably take a very long time before those former Roman territories to come together and start acting like one country (one empire) again. A mandatory requirement for an empire to be consider an empire is: 1) a common currency and 2) a common law. Getting all those countries to drop their individual currencies will certainly be a monumental task -but perhaps they will start working on that soon. Getting each country to come to an agreement on a common law -particularly pertaining to commerce, trade, and treatment of its citizens would also be a huge hurdle. But I think I heard that some of these European countries are thinking of unionizing. And to join, you need to abide by the rules of that union. Ah plenty of time, probably won't happen in our generation. But even if it doesn't happen in our generation (it being the Terminator riding in on a motorcycle), my suggestion is to play it safe and act on the King's advice:

"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." -Matthew 4:17
