The Dart model first made an appearance in 1960 as a full-size sedan, and was an immediate success that prompted Dodge to cut back on the rest of their medium-priced line. Following a significant redesign in 1967, the 1968 Darts only underwent subtle changes in body components with a 318 ci engine rated at 230 hp added as an option. Late in 1967, Dodge introduced the performance-oriented GTS model which eventually came with a 340 ci V8 standard in 1968, with an optional 383ci big block. The light weight and high power ratio of the 340-equipped cars together with the Dart's excellent handling characteristics, made them a drag strip favorite. The '68 Dart became the best-selling compact of the year.
How did Dodge top that? With the '69 Dart, naturally. A new grille was the most obvious redesigned component, with more subtle body changes being made. New for 1969, the Swinger 340 was the lowest-priced high-performance Dodge, and teh 340 4-bbl. V8 delivering 275 hp certainly delivered performance bang for the buck. Dodge loaded the performance-oriented GTS with either the standard 340 V8 or the optional 383 Magnum 4-bbl. V8, both with dual exhausts. Both the Swinger 340 and GTS proudly wore the distinctive "bumblebee stripes" to claim their places of honor in the Dodge Scat Pack.
